Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

strong smell after cuts do i need to rerun

Post by suburban hillbilly »

Hi i recently distilled a wash that I made using the all bran recipe as a template but used rye crispbread as the flavour ingredient.
I threw out from 24 litres 2ooml fores and 300ml heads then took 1.5 litres and bottled on oak chips leaving the tops off the bottles for a week. The still carried on producing and I ended up with a further litre of alcohol in 200 ml jars which after breathing I blended throwing away about 300ml off the endPut it in a bottle ,cut it down and drank it and it tasted amazing with real layers of flavour.
So with some enthusiasm I today decided to cut down the 1.5 litres I had left on oak. I poured both bottle into a small stainless bucket and cut down to 40%. As soon as I started to pour it out I picked up an odour that smelt to me like acetone. I have gone back to all three of the bottles and Im sure theres a smell that shouldn't be in there. It definately dosen't taste like the sample bottle I had from the back end of the run.
I have come to the conclusion that I need to rerun this stuff but am confused that there is such a strong smell after making what seemed to be reasonable cuts at the front end of the run.
This was around my seventh or eight full run using my still having made rums and all bran as well as some neutral and haven't come across this before.
Are there any reasons for this or have I simply got the cuts wrong?
All the best S H
