Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Teaching the family?

Post by kenfyoozed »

I see we all range in age, so many will have families. So when would you teach your son or daughter? If you will at all? I have 2 sons. When I first started the oldest-6y/o- wanted to taste my "rootbeer" as he called it. He wouldnt stop asking. So being a teacher by experience i allowed him to taste some rum. He spit and hacked and coughed, and has yet to ask again. He now knows to stay away from daddys rootbeer! He does enjoy helping add the sugar and changing the collection jars while running the still while i am there. So what say you?

My 24 year old son has requests in. Since he lives in a Condo he has no room for a still but wants to be part of the process if I buy all the material and share the rewards!

It all depends on how well they can keep quite. If that's not a consideration I would say 18. Having a 15 year old around that knows how to distill liquor is going to turn into a liability, sooner or latter your going to get some angry phone calls.

I've thought about this ALOT. My son is 5 and I often ponder whether I will let him in on Dad's little secret when he's old enough. Kids have big mouths and he definatley won't know(if I can help it) till he's well into his teens. Now If you were to get popped running a still with your kids in the house aside from all the likker charges your also gonna catch an Endangering the Welfare of a Minor charge. Where Im at they pass em out like parking tickets. Were talking about losing whats most dear to us. And I dont mean our stills. Keep it in mind , Im sure you already do. I do like to daydream about teaching my son our ways when he gets older but do I really wanna teach him something that can potentially get him thrown in fedral prison? I dont know. We'll see what the future holds. But my brother has been hinting around about sittin in on a run. Hes 22. Probably happen pretty soon.

There's definatley no reason to complicate this hobby by having stilling groupies, minors, or your own children getting too intimate with the going ons.

But, your family is going to be interested in what dad is doing. I have had short conversations with my kids about what is not apropriate to share with others.

So... just yesterday my daughter came home from school, sophomore, and related how in biology they were taught about how yeast works and what it produces. She was so proud of herself because she resisted the urge to expound on the process or, more importantly, the effect of adding heat to the concoction.

I was kinda proud too.

Coulda been worse of course.
