ANother Newbie from UK...Already in the 5h1t......

Post by Sniper7990 »

First off, Hi all and thanks for allowing me on this forum.
I have been brewing beers and wines for ages with some very good results
I have not started distilling yet, but hope to at the end of this month. However, I am looking for some advice for a recipie.
My favourote drink is dartk (Navy) Rum, especially Woods 100 (57%ABV), or Pursers (Same)
I want to make a traditional dark Rum from a Molasses wash. No greater in volume than 25l for the wash.
Due to budget constraints, I will be using an Air Still.
Anyone have any recipies for this, I would be very greatful.
Also, will the still and subsequent carbon filtration remove any colour from my distilate? If so, I was thinking of adding caramel b efore bottling

Thanx in advance

Well, first off. Welcome to the Forum!
Before others say it in maybe a more unpleasant way.
You have got lots and lots of reading to do. Some spend
months reading and never get it all.
For you, start out with the design and operation of a pot still.
If you haven't gotten your air still yet, please read about that. You can make
a pot still much cheaper than an air still and better product.

All booze comes out clear. Your dark rum will be clear and you darken it with
carmelized sugar or oak. Guess you could throw in some food dye, if you wish.

All the questions you have asked or just typed about can be answered with the
search function in the right top corner of any page.

Cheers gents, just one quick question regarding rum. If the distilate is clear, does it still retain flavour from the molasses in the original wash?

Arky said it right. Read about the air still and use the search. Budget restraints sorta puts the air still out of the question, Start thinking 'traditional' pot still.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Cumudgeon and loving it.

Yes it does, the same as other flavored drinks whisky, bourbon etc.
