Brass fittings

Post by Shine On »

Good morning all,

Is it ok to use the odd brass fitting for connection purposes?
I have seen mention of lead in brass. Not sure.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheers,

Mike

You can use brass fittings in the cooling line but not in contact with the alcohol or vapor path unless you pickle the brass (I personally would not use this method, however I know others have)!

Pickle the brass in 50/50 vinegar/hydrogen peroxide solution for 15mins. Rinse well and you'll be good to go.

Another method I've heard mention for brass compression connectors, is to tin the inside with a thin wall of lead free solder.
Apparently you use a paste made from graphite powder and liquid soap. Paint this on the parts you dont want tinned. Clean and flux the parts you do, then solder.
The solder will not stick to the graphite... No use for brass gate/ball valve...

Any brass I have I just pickle now and again...
