the problem with that 270 or 44 used for home def, is that if you do have to pull the trigger, that slug will go through your wall(s), and through your neighbors walls, etc, etc. Not a problem with 6 shot in a 12. And at close range, that 2 ounce load of 6's is much more effective.

Agreed, not to mention that hitting a moving target in the dark is a hell of lot easier with a 12 gauge than a .44, especially if it is single action and you are scared and shaky. I like the keg spur billy club idea. I'm not the home defense type though. My door is unlocked and intruders are welcomed with a glass of whiskey. I don't have kids though and I don't live in a dangerous area, maybe my attitude will change once my wife and I have kids. That is not to say that I am not armed, just that I have no intention of ever pulling a gun on someone, if I ever do it will be a last resort and it will not be a threat.

I also like his idea plus your idea!., That will be great.I also liked the last statement of yours.. :D

Got a Johnson bulldog and a stag hound for the house. that and a maglite, havent had any issues since getting the dogs.

As far as trying to act tough, If you walk around looking like a thug you will draw trouble to yourself. And remember, never pull a weapon on someone you are not willing / have the balls to use, It will be taken off you and used on yourself.

The more gates and walls people have to go over/through the better too. Nothing pissess of a thief more than multiple pandlocked gates - each one slows him down, makes noise to break down/cut through or limits the size and portablity of items he is able to steal.
If it is a hyperthetical Mal Hombre, then slowing him down gives you more time and opportunity for . . . what ever.
I have two gates with padlocks between my front door and property enterance (removable bollards and chain link).
Each set up with sheetplastic poking about 40-50 cm above their tops to make a noise if climbed over or broken through.
Where has all the rum gone? . . .

A pack of screeching Dachshunds will make a thief think twice, and they don't eat much. :D

160 pound Anatolian Shepard...roams farm, drags deer carcases home for other dogs, trains pit bull sidekick...although he's not perfect! He eats FedEx guys occasionally.

D cell Maglites are cool as clubs.
