Europe Vacation

Post by Bushman »

Well I am leaving today for Europe and will be gone almost 2 months on vacation. I will be visiting Norway, Germany, Austria, Turkey, and Iceland. Hope to take in a few distillery tours along the way. Will have some but limited access to the computer but will try to stay in touch especially if I go on any interesting tours or experience any unusual or good drinks that I can report back on.

Hi Bushman,

I wish you a great holiday in Europe. Leaving the Netherlands out? Hmmm ... now that is not a very clever thing to do!

If you are in Germany and visit München, do visit the Hofbrauhaus. Okay, it is beer and beer only, but its fun! Frankfurt? Try their cider. Steer clear of most of the fruit schnapps in Germany. Hang Over Alley all the way. The exception is in finding yourself an "artisan" distillery. Quite a few around & the best can be located in the Black Forrest region (Schwarzwald). Nuernberg: smoked beer. Tastes like you are drinking a salami sausage. But after a few, its great. The only problem, then is, when you drink your next regular beer. All of a sudden that tastes like sh*t.

Norway: Akvavit and Jemmebrand, the latter being homemade stuff. They are pretty good at home made stuff in Scandinavia. Probably because likker costs like a zilion per bottle over there. Iceland I don't know. Heared that everybody works the whole week, day&night, until it is like 17h30 friday afternoon. Then everybody starts drinking till monday morning. Good luck!

Turkey = Raki. Like Ouzo, only that is from Greece. Anisette vodka sort of stuff. And somewhere in that glass a man with a very big hammer is concealed.

Good luck on your trip. And if you happen to change plans and visit Holland: let's have a drink together. I make a pretty decent "jenever"!

Odin, my wifes cousins are in Norway, we come to Europe every 4 years and have visited your beautiful country. I have been to most of the places you suggest in Germany but thanks for the advice. We leave for the airport in about an hour.

Yes that was me and we like your recipe better than the Norwegian store bought Akvavit! Sitting at the airport waiting for our connecting flight.

When in Iceland be sure and try Brennivín; my son loves Iceland goes every year and he brought me a bottle. I'm here to tell you, that to my taste, that's the nastiness stuff I've ever had in my mouth!
Have a great trip.

Hell no, a little water never hurt a duck. Just keep Mash Rookies dog away from me.

She Loves Ducks! The good news for ducks is that she is a spaniel that is afraid of the water. You can always jump in to escape!
Taking her fishing today. No duck hunting! Crossing the straights of Jaun de Fuca on our way south. We will see how good her sea legs are.

Hi Bushman,
We are in Port Townsend. Yes on the way home now. Nice ride across the straights but my girlfriend got a little woozy. She lived.
I have not been here in eight or ten years. Much has changed. One of my favorite towns. I looked at property here some years ago. I thought of moving my operation here. It would have given me more boating and fishing opportunities.

We were going to stay another night so we could enjoy the city more but its raining this morning. I think I will call it. Head for home.
it has been a great vacation with great weather. At eight - ten knots plus getting through the locks we still will have a full day to get back from here.

Keep us debriefed on your trip. I have not been to Europe. England, Ireland and Italy will be my first trip. It is high on my bucket list. Lets make a point to get together for a drink this fall. Have fun!! (maybe we can get a duck out on the water)

Just saw the Woody Allen film shot in Paris - made me want to go back, but this time I'd stay in a hotel and not on park benches with my sleeping bag - my wife would never accept it

Have a good one, Bushman.

Well this is my last day in Turkey, visited Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Kusidasi unbelievable history. Bought a large Turkish waterpipe with six boxes of flavored tobacco thinking it might be good on the deck with a glass of hooch. Yesterday I tried Raki, it wasn't terrible but I wouldn't order two in the same night! Tomorrow I fly back to Norway for 3 days then on to Germany.

Odin I have always liked Baklava as my wife makes it at times. The Turkish food was great and my wifes cousin from Norway married a Turkish woman and her sister is a famous Turkish actor and her other sister is married to a man that is second in command of Turkish cell so they are well connected. They hired a private driver for us while we were in Istanbul and he was where we wanted him when we wanted him to drive us around. Life is good!

Currently in Germany, haven't been to any distilleries here yet but have sampled several drinks. Most of our family here like wine so we have been sampling wines from the various regions along with the local food. Monday I will be in Bavaria at Passau and then head to Austria for wine tasting.

BM,

Maybe try some green velteliner in Austria, Bushman. Young white wine. Good! Specialty in "hard" likker ia Stroh Rum at 80% (160 proof).

Taking the train to Munich today to attend our first ever Octoberfest. Thought it would be safer than driving the Two and a half to Munich drinking beer and then trying to find the car and drive back to Passau! Prost!
