Use this new one, MR! Like that you can compare taste development on UJSSM distilling with your flute! Would help the theory department further!

No, It’s your turn Larry. You are the guy out ahead of the pack that hasn’t shared yet. The young guys don get what you have going on down there in Rum land.

Okay, Yes I have been getting a little carried away. Damn dollar store. If this one does make neutral flavored spirits I think you should make the flavor humper for me. :D :D I will need you to fly up here, install the part and take the video. If it does everything I hope I will put your name in the credits. Way way way down at the bottom of the page. Just kidding Amigo.

I just realized I am tired. Really tired. I think I am just gonna drink for awhile. Meaning all weekend, maybe next week too.

Yes Odin. I will run my UJSSM through it

Well, I am not real happy about running this still today. I think that my arrogance has allowed me to forget that there will be a learning curve with any new still. Let alone a new design that has not been proven. I ran 10 gallons of UJSSM with mixed results.

It still may prove to be a decent design but I definitely struggled to keep things under control. A little short on research completion I have not provided all the controls necessary to understand what the hell was going on. I distilled without a parrot, boiler temp and with head temp readings that were taken differently than on other stills.

Watching the Mugs boil, flood and drain proved to be more distracting than not. Really cool to watch, I am not sure what the hell is happening. As LW says that it will connect dots, Yes, maybe once I figure what the hell is happening.

I found myself trying to manage reflux based on flooding and visual rather than temps and ABV. Wow that screwed things up.

Bottom line is that with the few tests I did during running, I was not getting ABV that I expected. It was running 150-165 P Taste and blending tests will reveal more about cuts seperation.

I still believe that it does a gradient refluxing action. Learning to manage that will be the next step. A little discouraged, I know any new deign takes time and effort to perfect.

MR,

Sounds like around 3 to 4 redistillations happening. Intested to find out what would happen to your ABV when you take the copper mesh out. Might not change that much? Apart from ABV, what was taste like? Any of the late phase taste coming over like with the flute? Or do you see a more gradient change in phases, like a (enhanced) potstill?

I will try to do cuts tasting and blending today so I will know more about the run.

Yes, It would be interesting to remove the packing and just watch the valves. It would also be interesting to remove the valves and watch just packing. There will still be the restricted 1-1/4” hole and vapor speed differential.

What is really amazing is how two or three mugs could flood almost completely, boil like crazy non stop for 30 minutes or longer before any change then only produce 150-165 proof. After watching all that boiling I thought it would be dead Pure.
It tells me we really don’t know what is going on inside a regular packed column.

I will not run this still again without a parrot. I need to ignore flooding, boiling and just run it by ABV take off. It certainly is a fun still to watch and run. It will take several more runs to figure out what it will do and what modification may be necessary before it is a viable design. I have even more respect for OD and all the work he has done.

Unfortunately I am heading into my busy season soon. I will have to start focusing on work instead of play. I will still make some booze but wont have much time to do R&D or builds.

I did get time to taste and blend before I raced out of town the other day.

The ABV was all over the place with my collection jars. After diluting samples I found that the flavors were a little more linear than with my flute. The heads were a little farther into hearts. Tails volume was greater and stronger flavor. A clearer flavor line than on the flute.
I think this unit will make a little cleaner neutral than my flute. I will bump this thread in a couple of months.
It will be awhile before I have time to build a parrot and correct a few other things.

Thanks for the support guys. Keep your mind open, Imagination free to roam.

MR:

Can you do a tutorial with pics on the build of the spiral condenser? More detail on twisting the tubes ... detail on the glass tubing, how to seat/seal them, hold them together, and sources for the glass pieces?

Pretty please.
