Another New Guy

Post by brewbob »

Hi,

My name is Bobby. Built my first reflux about 6-7 yrs ago and have been using it since. Although it works great I'm looking to upgrade my set up and need some ideas and info. Thats why I'm here. I've been lurking around here for a few weeks and figured it's time to say hello.

Welcome to HD, when you say upgrade your reflux what type of still are you thinking about? We have everything imaginable for a hobbiest design in both the reflux and pot still section. Have a look and come back if you have more questions.

Well, part of the reason is I want it to be a bit bigger. What I have now is a 1" column, about 26" tall and it is set up to run on a pressure cooker. Its valved to control the water flow through a Liebig condenser. In the past year I have been thinking about a larger pot. Thats when I came across the triclamp for a beer keg. I bought one and aquired a pony keg thinking that would do. Turns out my column was to short to be able to control the temp properly. So I addded a 2' section of 1" to the bottom, got the temp under control but the output is the same as running it on the pressure cooker. It'll run longer (more mash) but it's just as slow. So I want to build a new one. I have a pony keg and a half barrel, 2" triclamp, and hot water heater element (was using propane burner). I want to go with a 2" column. I like the Nixon offset head design and the Bokakob. After doing some reading around here I think I'll make a column with interchangable heads. So to answer your question I'm not sure yet.

Hello all, another new kidd on the block. This is a hobby I have been reaserching for a few years now and it it time to pull the triger. I am blown away by the amount of info in these threads. I have read every page of "Flute talk", and everything on the "boka" and will start construction in the next week. I have gotten my hands on some old family recipes and want to find out what the "mountain men" in my family put out back in the day.
