Utility Room
Had to do a bit of remodeling to get my mashing & stilling out of the kitchen, it has been several years since I have seen either my counter-top or eating table. I bought all new appliances and refuse to treat them like I have done in the past.

Re: Utility Room
I bought two new 15 gallon induction tanks as mentioned in earlier threads (actually holds 17+ gallon) and built a custom stand for them. Made it out of 1x3s with 1/2 ply fastened with deck screws, seems sturdy enough even without being attached to the wall.
Re: Utility Room
I topped the inside base with vinyl flooring and insulated with 4' tall reflectix, a 750 watt temp controlled space heater keeps the innards at 80F. It seldom runs for more than a few minutes at a time. I would rather use "brew" type belts but I did this over xmas and used what I had.
Re: Utility Room
I also covered my north windows with reflectix, junked my old bigass washer & dryer and installed a set of mini over-under to give me more room. I just got the laundry tub and have yet to plumb it but it has an obvious use. I set the height of the boiler so I can easily recover any backset from its petcock for future generations.
The control panel is custom designed for a particular application, utilizing phase angle controlled power via a 50 amp solid state random fired relay. Even though I built in all kinds of bells and fail-safes they will never be needed as my enjoyment in this hobby is running it under my control, but like a dead mans switch on a boat it is integrated nonetheless.

The bubble boys need no introduction.
Re: Utility Room
Even though I have house wide centralized smoke, fire, and monoxide detection, I feel even better with my property invasion perimeter alarm annunciation system. And believe me they are astute purveyors of all.

Looking good.
Good burglar alarm too.
You could be doing the washin' and doing the stillin at the same time.

Nice set-up, where did you get the large thermometer (what brand is it) on your column?

I live in the country and the 2 pit bulls keep everybody at bay with simple intimidation, they have 24 hour access to the properties perimeter except the driveway, even though the dogs are too smart to breech the 5 foot wire fence which is also fortified with 8000 volts of electrified juice trespassers don't know that.emptyglass wrote:Good burglar alarm too.

I get laundered work uniforms and only do personal laundry about once a month, hence the reason for going with a mini W&D set. Plus they are both 120v leaving me with the old 240v dryer circuit for the still - who wants to be bothered with plugging and unplugging all the time.
Re: Utility Room
Did I mention that it took losing 2 houses to two ex wives, plus $100,000 in child support to get to this point.Prairiepiss wrote:Man I want a cave. And some of those induction tanks would be nice. Did I mention I hate you?
This house is all mines and am remodeling the entire place into a man cave, my garage is actually used as a garage rather than a last retreat.
Re: Utility Room
Yep, it's a hillbillystill. I had the pleasure to pick my flute up in person, even though I took a wrong turn and crossed the Mississippi River twice by accident it was still a good trip. Stupid GPS don't work unless you turn it on...rockchucker22 wrote:Very nice! I too ordered an induction fermenter, havent got it yet, that must be a hillbilly still! Mike does nice work.
I mixed up two 15 gallon batches of ujssm in the induction tanks. The 20 pounds of cracked corn filled the conical bottoms even to the sidewalls added 25 pounds of sugar and 2 tablespoons of DADY to each and both finished dry at .995 in six days.

By popular request I will add a little detail about my tanks - no kickbacks involved.
I bought two 15 gallon tanks rather than a 30 gallon to have a bit more versatility.
They were $57.78 each and cost $25 to ship both, which got here in less then a week. This vender had the best deal on multiple tanks with shipping, others may be cheaper when ordering a single unit.

I was gonna make a gasket for the 12" screw-in lid and drill a hole for the air lock but just left the lid sit on loosely instead as I was in a hurry to get things going. I would not do this if I was planning on letting the finished mash sit for any longer than a week once finished.
I actually have six 5 gallon buckets of ujssm under airlock that have finished 6 weeks ago but have not had time to run them, I have not opened them to check if they turned to puke or not as that would just exasperate any infection if at all, for you younger folks that means "no peeking" until ready to souse.

Re: Utility Room
nice job, I know how nice it is to have a place where can focse and to be organized, I use to ferment in the basement and still in my garage carring the buckets up from the basement got old quick so I build this room, I call it the lab. I had to throw alot of junk away, that was'ent easy cause most of it was the wifes. anyway nice job and your flute looks like the work of KS, gotta love it.
Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies.
