ive been reading up on sassafras. growing up my grandmother would have me dig up roots for tea when she was filling sluggish. she told me it was a natural blood thinner. and i still make some about 3 times a year. while reading about sassafras i found that the FDA has outlawed the use/sell sassafras, they say that its a carcinogen (in lab rats) and that sassafras oil has chemicals that can be used to make some illegal drugs.

when i make tea it is a beautiful pink color. and i know it has been used in sarsaparilla and root beer before the FDA stepped in.

id like to know has any one tryed using sassafras for a flavoring?
If at first you don't succeed, find a bigger hammer.

if the FDA made it illegal then you know it has some healing powers and it works,

Here's what I found in wikipedia: In the United States, it was once widely used as a food additive in root beer, sassafras tea, and other common goods, but was banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after its carcinogenicity in rats was discovered. The rat drank 5 gallons in 5 minutes and died with a bloated tummy...had to be cancer.

safarole that is extracted from it, is a precursor to MDMA (aka Ecstasy)

none of our charing, toasting, sitting on ethanol for years are in any way going to produce that chemical reaction so its not really relevant.

if sassafras made good tea it could make good spirit ageing material.
