Mash barrel

Post by Barking Mad »

I've noticed that the old timers use the same oak barrel for their mash. I'm wondering if that lends to the quality of the wash instead of using plastic or SS?

Just a thought.

i would have to say they used it cause stainless and plastic barrels wernt around.. wood carries over in aging but i dont think much in fermenting...

Some say the yeasties get in the wood. So later ferments get stared with those yeasties.

There are a few that still use them as fermenters around here. If I had one and the room. I would sure give it a go.

::rant:: Every time I read the title of this thread it makes me think. Should it be called a mash barrel? Your not mashing in it? Your fermenting in it. So shouldn't that be a fermenter barrel? Sory not trying to be a jerk. It's just a pet peave of mine. Mash, wash, and ferment all get thrown in the same definition when they aren't. ::End rant::

Sory again have a nice day.

this is just one of many threads that iv seen lately that lean toward "the old way" its fine if your set in ways and only going to make one mash over and over.

Re: Mash (fermentation) barrel/tank

Fermentation tank/barrell I see your point, all are not the same...Some old school stories I read about said they use oak and not SS or plastic, even tho availible. I thought it may have been keeping things real, but given it's all organic, there may be something to it?? Like bakers that keep the "mother" yeast for sourdough bread or a wine maker with SS or oak (some vinos never touch SS, and some never touch oak)

I think I'll pick up a (quality) small Oak and good yeast and do some comparisions with SS or plastic when I get going on small runs. Should make for a good long term experiament.
