Moonshiners Research Paper

I am a freshman in college and in my English 101 course we are doing a research paper about a discourse community of our choice. We are supposed to observe the people in doing what they do and interview them to gain information for the paper. I chose to do moonshiners since it is an interesting topic for me and one that I already know a little about. I plan on writing about how home distilling has evolved from the main source of income of some people to more of an art or hobby today, and how they look at distilling in general. As far as the interview and observing, I know thats pretty much impossible because of the secrecy of the suject.

If anybody feels like throwing their opinon in there it would help a lot.
Some things I need to know are:
-How do you look at distilling in general, is it art, science, or a family tradition?
-Why do you make alcohol?
-Any opinions about the legality of distilling.
-Any other views about distilling or moonshiners.
