pipe joining question

Post by poboy »

Here's a question for all you expert metalworkers out there. Can you braze / silver solder stainless steel pipe to stainless fittings when it is a butt type connection? My TIG skills are non-existent and finding stainless pipe and fittings with socket connections like copper water pipe is tough. Most everything is a butt connection. Looking for tips on these kinds of joints. Thanks!

yes, i have done it before...no bevel in the joints, I used a square end butt joint. Used a pipe cutter for each side to ensure the ends where square....
thinking inside the box is for squares....

i know this isn't exactly what your talking about but it will help me explain what im about to say...

yes you can but Braze stainless to stainless. in my pic you can see the stainless fittings Brazed to the copper tube then the center hole drilled out. in the other one you cna see the copper cup but brazed to the plate.

what i would suggest to but together stainless to stainless is this...

take the two pieces of stainless, clean and sand the crap out of them, make a ring out of the brazing metal and place it in between the two pieces (sandwich). make sure you use the right flux and heat the crap out of it. as it melts it will flow all around the contacting surface and braze together.

in know this is hard to visualize but it works like a charm i dont have any better pics to help but the key thing to remember is the right flux and filler metal along with a good surface prep is the key.
