Plastic Test Tube

Post by brewbillybob »

Hello guys. I need some advice. I just purchased and alcoholometer along with a plastic test tube for the alcoholometer to measure in. I wasn't thinking when I bought it that plastic was a no no. Do you think that this would be ok for the short term the distillate is going to be in the test tube. Appreciate all the helpful advice. Just want to be as safe as I can be.
Thanks again.

I still remember what happened when I poured some hi test into my plastic test tube...

It turned white... instantly... and the clear distillate got cloudy...

so, no... It makes a nice rain gauge tho...

I've been through several glass test tubes. Keep knockin the damn things over. So I've gone to using a glass flower vase, heavier, more stable, works great.

High % ABV Alcohol is a solvent for plasticizers so your distilate shouldn't touch any plastic at all. Not even the famous 'Solo Cup'. I don't think you want plasticizers inside you or any of your friends.

the tube that came with mine wrinkled up instantly, and turned foggy. rendering it useless. Needless to say, i poured the test sample in with my fores. If ya use it, just dont keep the sample.

The plastic collars for glass test vessels give some insurance. I'm going to make a test parrot out of copper for testing so it'll be harder to break. I was born without coordination and still have none.

When I Google Plastic Test Tube I get sites that want to sell me in bulk and the sizes seem to be the kind one sees in chem labs. Anyone got a link to a place I can buy one test tube big/deep enough to float the alcoholmeter?

+1 no plastic one. After reading this thread I don't know why you would want one?

Any good homebrew or wine making supplier should sell the glass ones. If they don't and all they offer is plastic ones. I don't know that I would buy from them anyway.

My wife and I use a pyrex 100ml Glass Graduated Cylinder, has a good base and I have to knock them over several times to break them. Good stuff, but I'm looking forward to using metal.
