Anyone know what this is worth?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Anyone know what this is worth?

Post by Bushman »

I found but haven't purchased yet a ceramic jug that appears to be in excellent condition. The jug has a handle and near the top is inscribed:

Duckworth & Co
Old Trafford
Essence Distillery
Manchester
2

I am guessing the 2 stands for empiral gallons as it is too large for 2 liters.

I tried to research it and I could find old Duckworth Distillery labels but no jug. Also the original building that housed the Distillery looks to be old and very cool. I am guessing the jug is not that old but it is in an antique store, he hasn't been able to sell it and dropped the price for me $35.00 but is still asking $50.00. Not sure I want to spend the money as I already have a lot of containers but this just looked cool!

Thanks for any help on this

No picture as I saw it last night in the store before heading to a beer festival. If I get serious I will try to run down there and take a pic or maybe I will see it and decide I need another large vessel that will age things in the dark without having to put into a cabinet.

I've looked at old ceramic pots and jugs from the prohibition era, but my concern was lead glazing. Not to rain on your parade, but I was just not certain that high proof spirits wouldn't leach out something undesirable from the pot.

I would have bought one in a heartbeat if there was someway to be sure about the safety.

Bull Rider, I had similar thoughts but I think this one came from a distillery as it says "Essence Distillery Manchester" on the jug plus it doesn't appear to be real old like some I have seen.

PS: Glad to see you back on the forum, haven't seen a post from you in a while!

Interesting I have a crock jug that a friend gave me. I have not used it and I had not considered lead. Is there anyway to tell.
