i am unsure
yhe reason i ask is it is hard for me to find grain and corn where i am and the only corn substance i have found was feed maize and kibbled feed maize so i was looking at the containers of beer brewing mixes at the supermarket and wondered if they would be able to be put into a wash for a whiskey or bourbon wash
i am unsure but i think most of these tins contain hops aswell

Oh, I thought it was a blend of grain. I wouldn't personally use them if they are already hopped. Others might. If you do use hopped beer for distillation, don't expect a whiskey you're used to drinking.

I have just read that in some other countries Maize is refered to as corn which it technically is so im now knowing when some of you guys talk about corn it can also be maize

unless you mash the corn/maze it wont add much so you just figure the sugar.

I've done some really nice whiskeys from beer ingredients (without hops). If you try extract instead of mashing grain, boil it until it foams up and subsides, then cool and pitch the yeast. This will make the wash less inclined to foam up in your boiler. The spent grain from beer making makes a good sugar wash, too.

That sounds like LME Liquid Malt Extract to me. It's condensed wort in a can. They extract the sugars from the malt then boil it down to concentrate it. It won't have any enzymes in it so it can't convert any starches to sugars. Like a grain malt can. Some are hopped some are not. Read the can it should say if it is or not. If it isn't it will work good to make a malt whiskey. Just add water as per directions and pitch yeast. It would be a simple starter. Then you could find some grains and try somethin else.

Good luck. Something to think about. If they have barley it won't be malted. If you are wanting to go AG all grain then you will either need to malt it yourself. Or buy some malted barley. Or use powdered enzymes. Whole core can be malted too. You would just need more of it then malted barley. Wheat will work too. That's what I use mainly.

Here are a couple of threads about wheat malting. It's basically all the same. But you can do a search and find more about a specific grain.

http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 34&t=23538

You will also need to do some serious reading up on AG mashing. Once you figure out what grains you are going with. So you know which to research. They all have different little things that help each grain. It's better to be over prepared then needing help in the middle of doing something. And there is plenty of info here and the parent site to get you prepared.

Search around for Dnderheads bucket method of malting.

Instead of adding a post I will just edit this one in.

Here is a good AG to start with. NCHooch's Carolina bourbon.
