re distill old unwanted liqueur

Post by weingeist11 »

 hi i just joined this forum a minute ago because i am looking for someone who might be able to give us some advice with the following:
when i started distilling about a year ago i produced a lot of good 92% spirit which i watered down to 40% which then went through a ceramic and carbon filter [essentia]
from some of the 40% spirit i made a number of sweet liqueurs like hazelnut, pear, amaretto, appleschnaps etc. all of which are not to our taste so they are just in the way!
my question is: can i re-distil them in my [copper + stainless] reflux still which produces approx. 92 -95 % spirit from normal sugar wash.
would the resulting Spirit be tainted with flavours, / will the sugar content of the liqueur interfere with the distilling, /will the sugars or the flavours affect the the still itself,
like burning the sugars or flavours lingering in the stainless mesh in the Copper reflux tower, etc.
thank you for your help

Weingeist,

I'd water your product down to 40% or lower and re-run it. You might want to double or tripple run it if too much flavor
comes over on the first reflux run. Cheers,

Depending on how much flavor and sugar is in them. To much flavor can carry over. Even in a reflux. And to much sugar can give off flavors when ran through a still.

It mite be better to do them one at a time. Add some feints and water to it dilution to 30% and run it. This way you won't get flavors crossing over. Or you could make up a wash and add it to that run?

But if they are highly sweetened and flavored. I don't think I would run them all together at once.

 thanks prairiepiss and augustwest ! i think i will water it down to 20% and add one or two litres of that mixture to the wash just before the run and use it up slowly in small doses like that - i just hope it doesn't ruin
the usually perfect batches of 92% spirit i produce and also i hope it doesn't do any harm to the hardware !
i am going to run another batch today and i will let you's know about the outcome within the next few days.
thanks and have a nice day!

 i just ran a batch of 25 lt wash to which i added 1 litre of fairly sweet and obnoxious tasting hazelnut liqueur [28% strength] and the
resulting spirit of 92% strength was as beautiful and clean smelling as usual; even after i poured the liqueur in the wash i could not smell the
liqueur any more just the yeasty smell of the wash, which made me happy already, imagine the happiness when the spirit came out clean!
so guys, thank you very much for your help and have a good day !
