building coonass rockets

Post by Marshwalker »

I don't have many pictures showing while i was building the burners.. but i will be building 5 more sets of boilers in the next month or two and will add more pictures to give you a visual... the link below is of me firing up the burners and showing off the pot...now this is a boiler for cooking crawfish, but the burner can be used for other things 8) but just to explain what it entails:

Items needed:

1/4" grease sert (used for pumping grease into fittings, gears, winches, etc...)
1/4"x schedule 80 mpt fitting (i used aluminum fittings for the burner..but material type for this doesn't matter)
3/8" mpt fitting
1 1/2" x 3/16" square tubing
10" peice of 2" pipe
belt sander or bench grinder
step drill bit or plasma torch
welder (but you can braze this if you don't have access to a welder)

http://youtu.be/Et7jfBseZTM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
speed square (or any other small square you can use to find 90*)

Inside of a grease sert there is a spring and a bearing. The spring is at the bottom and the bearing fits as a seal inside the top of the grease sert. So when pressure is applied by your grease gun, the bearing pushes down against the spring allowing grease to enter..... with that said....

1. Take the grease sert with a pair of vice grips and hold it by the nipple.

2. Turn your belt sander or bench grinder on and grind the backside of the grease sert (side with the threads) until enough is grinded off in order for you to remove the spring and bearing (it will usually fall out)... this doesn't take much effort.

3. Once spring and bearing are removed, screw the grease sert into the 1/4" mpt fitting.

4. Take your 1 1/2" square tubing (whatever length desired) and draw a line across the tube at the point in which you would like the burner to be placed. You will then find center of that line (on 1 1/2" tube it will be at 3/4") and draw a cross at that point. This is just for a reference when cutting or drilling...doesn't have to be exact, but is a good idea to make your hole as close to center as possible.

5. Next, you will need to cut or drill you hole to atleast 1/16" bigger than the OD of the mpt fitting. This extra width will allow the fitting to slide into the hole easily.

6. Slide the fitting inside the hole and hold it as straight as possible, and put a small tack on it.

7. Once tack is on and it is standing by itself, use a small square on two adjacent sides of the fitting to make sure you have it straight.....THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!.... If you think you have it straight, sit it down on something and step back and look at it from a distance to for another reference..

8. If it is square as you can get it, tack the opposite side from where the first tack is... then go in between those two tacks and start welding it down. Put one complete weld all the way around... i normally put two overlapping welds all the way just to make sure it is in place... (if using aluminum for this burner, let the aluminum cool in between welds because it can tamper with the inner threads of the fitting if you don't.)

9. once your 1/4" burner is in place, figure out where you want your gas input to be and draw a line and find center just as you did on the 1/4" MPT.... cut or drill your hole to fit 1/16" bigger than your 3/8" fitting and repeat the process of welding or brazing it in place.

10. Next you will take your 2" piece of pipe and notch out the bottom of it...... this is hard to explain..but you will cut out two 2" x1" pieces directly opposite of each other on the bottom.... I will leave two pieces of pipe just hanging down like tabs... these tabs will slide over your 1 1/2" tubing directly over your burner...and will leave an 8" piece sticking out above the burner nipple with small gaps on both sides of the fitting.... that sounds really confusing, but if you look at the picture and the video it will make sense to you.

11. The 2" pipe will act as funnel of sorts just to direct the jet flame to where you want it....being your 1/4" burner was set at 90*, you will center this 2" pipe over it and square it at 90* also.... the fire will push up out of the pipe directly where this pipe is pointing.... once centered and at 90*, place a tack...check again for 90...tack again on the opposite side then weld or braze it on..

12...thats it... your ready for some gas and ignition.... unless this is going to be mounted to a frame or truck rim or whatever you decide.. these burners really put out a bunch of heat and the effort of gas is minimul... it will really get something boiling quick!!! My 2 burner set up gets a 200qt (50gl) pot boiling in 4 minutes... to me, thats pretty fast!!

I'm sure there are other ways of doing this but, this one is tested and proven... it works fellas! and is relatively easy to build... below is a picture of the two burner set up on one of my boiling pots and also a video of firing them up. hope you enjoy it and i will answer any questions asked... Thanks and enjoy!!!

forgot to add....you will need to weld/braze end caps on the 1 1/2" tubing also... sorry

Have you seen the fish fryers where they use a burner like yours. But they direct it into a tube mounted horizontal in the fryer pot. It goes in does a 180 turn and comes back out then up like a stack. I so want to build one.

Now something to think about on your still boiler. The concentrated heat from your burners could pose a problem. Depending on what you are running. It could lead to scorching. Something that mite help would be to use a thicker plate where the flames make contact. This would more evenly distribution the heat. Making it less likely to scorch. Another thing mite be to place them so they actually hit the boiler where its at an angle. So that things like yeast and solids from the ferment can't collect on that surface. Like on your boiler with the v bottom. Instead of being under the v out them on the sides of the v.

Just thinking outloaud here. Scorching can ruin a good run. Quick.

ha ha haa!!!! naa... coonass is just a slang nick name for cajun people that grew up on the bayous of south louisiana.. thats it... it used to be viewed by some as an insult..now it's just a part of the folklore...

i didn't think of the scorching deal... figured it would spread out good enough once hitting, but i can see the problem there with solids... a bunch will matter on the amount of gas you pour to it too... it can put out an extremely high amount of heat if you let it...but can be tame also.. I agree with you that adding a doubler plate to where it hits could help prevent any problems because it becomes indirect heat at that point.

I haven't seen the type of fish fryer you are talking about, but i'm gonna do some digging now..

I had a neighbor that his job moved him up here from down your way. His dad built them. His was freakin awesome. He made the pot like yours with a v bottom for a drain. It was wide enough to fit two fri baskets like they use at McDonald's. The back wall of the pot was tall enough to hang the baskets on to drain. And when you set the baskets in the pot they rested on the heater tube. He used square tube about 4" for the heating tube. And just had a burner like yours pointed into it. I wanted to build one for a long time. And my thoughts was to make a lid like the one you have on your cookers. That would fold over the back. And you could have a rack in it. So you could dump the cooked fish and puppys in it and they could drain even further. With a drain valve on it so you could drain it before closing it up. His were all stainless. But aluminum could work I think.

i've seen aluminum fish fryers like your speaking of... it's really a simple build just a bit tideous...but for guys like yourself and many others in here...building something like that fryer or that boiler would be childs play... a still is much more demanding in my eyes.

I got to second PP's idea, I have been thinking about the exact same thing for a long time! My propane and keg work great, but are not ideal. BTW, I saw this on a bumper sticker in Larose,LA "I might be a coon ass, but what kind of ASS are you?" :moresarcasm:

I grew up in SE Texas and we had a HUGE Coonass population. The joke we told was "How did all the Coonasses find their way to Texas? The followed a peg legged man thinking they was crawfish holes." You gotta love the Cajun folks cause they laugh really loud, cook really good and drink like there is no tomorrow!
Bless the hands of the distiller for he makes the world a better place.

Hey PP... been thinking about the scorching thing a bit... instead of adding plate to where the jet hits or setting the burner to hit on the angled plate, do you think a piece of stainless flame screen in the bottom of the inside of the pot(say about 2" off the bottom) would get rid of the worries of scorching?

If your not familiar with flame screen, it's a fine screen that fire cannot penetrate... pretty wierd stuff... but the solids wouldn't be able to go all the way to the bottom either... whatcha think?
