Hunting?

Post by Hawk_ »

Im sure some of you out there are hunters. I practice a different style of hunting. Through the sport of Falconry I use my Hawks to catch Jack Rabbits in the Colorado Prairies. I have 2 female Harris Hawks currently. Sonya and Amelia work together to catch Jacks and hunt quite well together. Next year we will be moving back to Alaska so my girls wont get to go with me. The cold temps will be too much for them so Ill have to get a Goshawk or a RedTail. Cant wait to hunt snowshoe hare with a bird.

I'm in Ohio. Not the best place to practice falconry but I try. Been at it about 30 yrs. Great hobby. I mainly fly redtails because that's what I have game for. I've toyed with coopers hawks and had one harris hawk about 20 years ago.

Long time eh Buteo? I know a couple falconers in Ohio. Seems squirel and cottontail are the mainstay of hunting there.

Always been fascinated with Birds of Prey just not something I

Great photos

That sounds like fun. Be nice to have a bird to cut down on the leg work...

oh, there is just as much leg work. Maybe more. While the bird is really ambush hunting even from the fist you are actively moving around searching to make something scurry.

Dont know much about it but can you train them to get ducks out of the water I feel bad sending a dog in. If a bird can get them without getting wet I would say thats the way to go. Just gotta stay away from other duck hunters so inexperienced guys dont shoot the bird.

That's some mighty fine looking birds, we have a TON of redtail hawks here, I hadn't ran into anyone who has trained them though, I saw some falconry going on on that mountain men tv series the other day, interesting hobby I bet

The birds can and are trained to get ducks. Unfortunatly not so much with the retrieval part. Sometimes a duck is caught and swam back to the shore. I have a friend that lost a hawk last year, the brother to one of my birds and it caught a crow and landed in the water. They both ended up dead.

It is also unlawful to hunt with hawks and firearms at the same time.

Fun Idea though.

Redtail hawks are a ton of fun. Built like tanks. I may be trapping one soon for the upcoming season.

Here is a short video I did. Too windy to hunt but great for stretching the wings.
