trip to Jim Beam Distillery

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.

Nice pics. Thanks for sharing.

I particularly like the barrel cut away pic. A fine example of what we should be working towards. The fact the the alcohol works its way through three distinct layers then back out. To do it over and over again. Fine example of why I choose oak sticks over chips. How can you get the same result with a chip?

Doesn't mention the chared layer acts kinda like a charcoal filter as the alcohol passes back and forth through it. So not only does it add color. But it smooths the product and flavors it.

And with it penetrating that had into the unchared oak. It has to influence taste to some extent.

Sory. A little off track.

That is pretty cool man, thanks for sharing. Did it change the way you would do anything? or are you convinced your methods are better? Oh, and Mr P, I agree that chips cant get the same effect as a barrel, that is if there's only 1 kind of chip. I personally use charcoal sticks, and toasted and untoasted chips, to get the 3 layer effect, I just don't have to wait as long for it to penetrate to that layer...

Hey Fullhouse, I went there last June and I was told they would have distillery tour in Oct 2011, I assume they are not running those tours yet? How did you like the the still model in the Beam house?
That pot still they have in the shed is awesome! I enjoyed it but I was looking to see the stills.
Smells awhole lot better in the warehouses than it taste.
