Foreshots Question
I recently purchased a Mile Hi 13 gallon Pot still with a 24" column. I intend on utilizing the unit as a true pot still and will be putting 1 roll of loose copper mesh at the bottom of the column during the distill process . Do I still remove approximately 100-150mL per 20L of the initial run to remove the foreshots or does this quantity change due to the limited amount ofcopper mesh in the column??
Re: Foreshots Question
Welcome...also you need to do a bit of an into and tell us who you are, and from your question you may need to do a bit more reading in the new member reading lounge....no matter what type of still you are running the fore shots must always be a chucked as that is we're the nasties are , like methanol. If you haven't found the lounge yet I will post a link for you.

Re: Foreshots Question
To use that unit as a "true pot still" you shouldn't have any packing in the column. It's a good habit to separate the foreshots out since it contains the lower alcohols (I use them for lighting grills, cleaning tools, etc...) although unless your doing fruit washes you probably won't be separating out much--if any--methanol. The amount you remove depends upon your wash size and and ABV.

Re: Foreshots Question
Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. Just joined and thought I'd start out with the foreshots question. Located in Suburban Chicago and have been interested in doing some home distilling for a while now with a few friends. We all chipped in a bought a nice set-up from Mile-Hi Distilling. I'm amazed at all of the information on this site and the diversity of equipment and techniques. Our group is anxiously awaiting delivery of the equipment, and in the meantime are digesting as much info on the subject that we can get our hands on.
Look forward to sharing our experiences and questions with the group here on HD.

Re: Foreshots Question
Welcome aboard.
You will eventualy want to run that still in reflux mode. So you mite want to read the cm mod link in my signature.
As far as foreshots. You aren't gona want to drink tje early heads anyway. So just take some extra fores out. Read the novice guide to cuts. And use small jars to collect in till you get a handle on it. Let it air out 24 to 48 hours before you make your final cuts decision.
Good luck be safe take your time.
