Love to distill, but drinking gives me heartburn

Post by rubicon_in_ga »

So I got into distilling mostly for the fun of it, but I have one big issue when it comes to drinking. I'm 33 years old now, don't have any problems like ulcers or anything that would prevent me from drinking, but 75% of the time when I drink (especially straight liquor, i.e, on the rocks) I get the worst heartburn either while drinking or within 24 hours. Because of this, I've never been much of a drinker, and I can probably count the number of times I've been drunk during my lifetime on one hand. I'd like to be able to sample my own liquor and develop a refined taste so I can improve my product, but the discomfort of heartburn nearly every time I drink has caused me to be gun shy and not want to drink at all, which sucks.

On a side note, I know it's possible to develop a taste for different things, and sometimes it just takes trial and error to find what's right. For instance, I started smoking cigars several years ago, and there were alot of cheap crappy cigars in the beginning that could've just as easily turned me off to cigars altogether, but through trial and error, I've discovered certain blends and styles that I definitely favor, and I can distinguish alot of the subtle differences between cigars now, and I really know what I like and don't like. The difference is, the cigars never gave me a negative side affect like heartburn, so it was much easier to develop a taste for what I like and didn't like.

So my question is, has anyone else experienced this, and hopefully overcome it? I want to be able to drink in moderation, without heartburn nearly every time. Are their any tips or suggestions ya'll might have? The only thing I can come up with, is to water down the liquor and try to develop a tolerance for it, and eventually add less and less water to my drinks until I can drink it straight without my body revolting against me.

Thanks for the help!

A recent thread ("Nosing and Tasting," I think) discussed watering liquor to something like 40 proof for tasting. That apparently allows the flavors to come across better.

Good luck.

Beside spirits are there other drinks (beer, wine etc) that give you the same sensation?
Are there foods that do the same?

Man that sucks. I suffer from acid reflux. I have yet to find a specific food or drink that triggers it. But I have found many that aggravate it more when its happening. I have tried just about all the different medications. Most of the time they will only work for up to two years. Then I have to change. Currently I'm using a probiotics and beano. But something that does help. Although strange. If I eat a Jalapeno a little before a meal or a drinking session. I'm less likely to get it. Supposedly the pepper will cause endorfins to elevate. Bla Bla Bla. I just know an old woman told me to do it a long time ago. And it works. But if hot and spicy food gives you heartburn? I would be cautious.

I feel for you. I know that crap can suck.

from my understanding Alcohol can contribute to heartburn in a number of ways. First, alcohol can trigger the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and when it relaxes it causes a backward flow that would not normally occur. Also, beer and wine can increase the amount of acid produced in the stomach, causing heartburn or indigestion.
so try clear spirits, like vodka, mixed with mineral water or similar.it mite also help if you had something to eat along with the drink like soda crackers?
but on the other hand,I beleve this is why some do drink befor/after meals.it increases acid thus increasing digestion?

I use to have the whole acid reflux thing, then I found out I had sleep apnea, I have to wear a damn breathing mask now at night, BUT, no more acid reflux. :wtf: the dr said I could #1- lose some weight, or #2-wear a breathing mask at night  I guess I chose the second

Most of my acid problems went away when I stopped consuming milk products. Fermented milk products are ok, like cheese, but straight ahead milk/cream really got to me. The acid hung around even when I wasn't drinking milk. I guess it was in my system. The probiotics have also been a big help.

Sorry it took me so long to get back guys. Had a busy weekend running my still! :-) I get acid reflux and heartburn from a variety of foods, but I've learned to control it by watching what I eat. Beer and wine don't give me the same problem, and I haven't paid enough attention to it to figure if it's a dark/light liquor that does it to me, but I have noticed I generally don't have the same problem when I drink mixed drinks. It's usually straight up liquor, like shots, or on the rocks (before the ice waters down the liquor). I do notice once the ice melts and waters it down some, it's alot more bearable. Haven't tried the pepper idea, but I'll give it a shot. I'll also try eating a little something when I drink, to see if maybe that has an affect. I've noticed it's with any liquor, not just the stuff I make. Most recently it happened with some 80proof rum I made and aged for about 6 months on oak chips. Flavor was great, but before the ice in my glass melted, I had to have a chaser of something sweet (kool-aid in this case) to keep the heartburn down. As for sleep apnea, my ex wife has that, and swears I do too, but I refuse to wear one of those masks just to sleep. I know it can be helpful in many ways, but I've chosen to eliminate that option for personal reasons. I just finished the first run of some sugar wash vodka I'm trying to make, so after the third run, I'll knock it down to 80 proof and compare it to my aged rum and see if there's a difference.

Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it!

I've recently solved my acid reflux problems with a little apple cider vinegar and honey in a nice big glass of warm tap water. Drink once or twice a day for a week or two and see what happens. A tablespoon of each in the water might do the trick. The key is to signal your stomach that there's more acid there than you need, which is the signal to your stomach to stop pumping out so much acid.

Acid reducers force it, which causes your stomach to rebel and produce even more when you stop. Stay away from Maalox and Tums, just add more acid to your diet. Sauerkraut, pickles, kim chi, whatever works.

I used to have sleep apnea. Doc had me wear this computer thinggy while'st I slept and charted it all out, said I had sleep apnea. I had the choice of lose weight or wear a machine at night. I experimented and found that if I stopped drinking after dinner and wore one of those nose strips at night I could get by without a machine or losing weight. It really did make a BIG difference in the way I felt. Fact is, to much booze will screw up your sleep, give you heartburn, make you stupider, and in other was F'up your life. Figgern out what "Drinkn in Moderation" means is the hard part :econfused: My wife has real problems with reflux and heartburn. Everyones has trillions of gut critters that help you digest your food. Those critters live together with your body usually happily, but sometimes not. You should just experiment with your diet until you find what works for you. No two people are the same. Even though it's inconvenient my wife and I have to eat different stuff. Hope that helps... :D

I have acid reflux. i'm drinking a beer and it's burning right now. But when i eat really healthy (lots of vegetables, less fat, not a tone of meat) I don't get the burn at all.
avoiding tomato and coke helps a lot too.
