Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Using one of Mile Hi Distilling's 8 gallon pot still with a 3 gallon thumper... 150 proof sweet tasty rum. It was fantastic. Was a little scared of using the thumper for my first run, but I figured I had nothing to lose, besides 18 lbs of sugar and a bag of turbo. It took about an hour and a half to get going. But about an hour later, I had 4 liters of 150 proof rum.
Ok guys... is it always this simple?

Congrats on your first run. Did you build the thumper? Or is this something new mile high is selling.
And a turbo wash I wouldn't really call a rum. I mean technically it could be called a rum made from sugar cane. But it won't be the same as rum. And if you think that OS good. Wait till you try a good recipe from the tried and true section.

That depends... does it smell at all like nail polish remover? Will your skeptical girlfriend/wife/partner/whatever drink it? Success with distilling is somewhat subjective. I would be very surprised that would be able to get great product from your first run. The reason I asked about nail polish remover is because you mentioned 4 liters in an hour, which seems a little fast and usually means poor separation.DistillerofDisdain wrote:Ok guys... is it always this simple?

No smell of acetone. No taste of acetone. It did have a little "wet cardboard" smell to it at first. Once I filtered it, that went away, and I was very pleased with the taste. Thanks!!!

Mile Hi sells a thumper. I think I might be the first person to use it! I was very satisfied using the turbo, but lets not beat up on me too much. I figured I would get the basics down first, then move into non turbo mashes, along with malts and grains.Prairiepiss wrote:Congrats on your first run. Did you build the thumper? I did. I cut it down to 37%. Very smooth, yet still maintained its richness. I kept a little bit of 75% for cooking with.King Of Hearts wrote:Did you make cuts?

LOL ! ! !
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Forgive me, the only answer I have for you is the wash size, which was 6.5 gallons. Being this was my first batch, I was a little hasty (maybe VERY hasty) and didn't do much measuring or note taking. I was tickled pink just to see something come out of the condenser. To be honest, I didn't really expect anything decent to even happen.King Of Hearts wrote:Ok, so what was the size of the wash, % abv and what were the % abv cuts and amounts?DistillerofDisdain wrote:I did. My next run will be the Sweetfeed Whiskey. I plan on taking copious notes in order to keep good records.

""I cut it down to 37%. Very smooth""
"cuts is not diluting ,,not in this case .its taking off in fores/heads/hearts/tales.
this simply removing the bad from the good..

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Ok, 6.5 gals with 18lbs of table sugar will give you 12% if fermented out all the way. It is suggested you leave 30% head space in the boiler, which would be 5.6 gals. You can probably be ok with 6, you obviously did 6.5 and had no problems? A different wash might if say you ran an all grain wash or beer. Just to give you a heads up.DistillerofDisdain wrote:Forgive me, the only answer I have for you is the wash size, which was 6.5 gallons. Ahhhh.... I did not "cut". I should have though. About 10 ounces in, I took a small sample, and it was great. As I continued it lost some of its quality. not enough to call it bad, but enough to notice a difference.Dnderhead wrote:""I cut it down to 37%. Very smooth""

Thanks for being patient with me. This nomenclature is killing me.
Is there a glossary somewhere?

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
You can always re-run it and make proper cuts for practice, but dilute it down to about 25 or 30 abv before you run it. Never run over 50 abv, my low wines are sometimes 40 abv. You run the risk of explosion with high abv runs, keep it safe. There is also other reasons to keep it lower, because of bonding with water.
