Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.
I am ready to run my first mash (finaly) i have 10 gallons of oat whiskey (the recipe that i found here on the tried and true) i have read that you should do a stripping run but with only 10 gallons will i have enough liquid to to a spirit run??? my starting hydrometer reading is 1.065 and it finished at 1.000 for an approx ABV of 8.63% or should i just do this run normally run at 190 degrees and let her go.
I would do a normal pot still run. Temps don't mean squat. But run it like a single run. Collect in small jars. Let it air for 24 to 48 hours. Then make cuts. At this point see if you like what you made. If you do your done. If not then consider a second run. By either diluting to 40% or under and running all of it again. Or making a second wash and adding what you got from the first to it and running it.
Running it normally seems to be ok, one question though how to I tell how strong it is??? I have a hydrometer which I thought would tell me but it just sinks to the bottom??? It is a wine hydrometer
