Looking to Make Vodka
New to distilling have been brewing beer for years. I am looking for some good vodka recipes. Who's got em?
Re: Looking to Make Vodka
First thought would be to go to the new distillers section and read...and then to Tried and True recipe section. Neutral is what you could look for. Welcome!
Re: Looking to Make Vodka
I looked and didnt see a Vodka Recipe
Re: Looking to Make Vodka
almost anything will make vodka.just run threw a reflux still or several times threw a pot still.until it has no or little flavor.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
What do you mean by vodka? There are different views of what vodka is. But generally around here vodka is viewed as a neutral spirit. And use the Birdwatchers recipe or the WPOS. To make a neutral and run it through a reflux still taking product off at near 95% ABV. While others like their vodka to have a little more to it and use recipes like all bran or something the like. And run it multiple times through a pot still.
There really isn't a vodka recipe. Like Dnderhead said. It's all how you run it through the still.
So what is it your looking for in your vodka.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
Big fan of ketel one or something like that. I just made a pot reflux still and looking for ideas
Re: Looking to Make Vodka
ya that is a wheat vodka supposably pot distilled..
that whould be mashed and fermented wheat and distilled several times threw a pot still.
but i doubt they do it that way.most likely they run a pot still with a rectifier.( a pot still
with a reflux column attached.)

The last year or so I've been making vodka from DWWG. With a squeeze of lemon it's fantastic. Before that I was using the All Bran recipe (also excellent). I wasn't fond of the tomato paste wash. I'm trying the Uncle Remus Rice Vodka at the moment. They all work.
Re: Looking to Make Vodka
I used the Gerber recipe for a base for some gin. Actually, my base was half Gerber and half fruit wine but the Gerber portion came out so nice as a neutral I saved a small bottle to use for bloody mary's. It was quite nice. I pot stilled it 3-4 times to get it really clean.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
Ketel One is a wheat based vodka. Make an all grain red wheat beer of around 8.5%. Pot distill three times. Distillation one takes abv to 26/27%, distillation round 2 takes it to around 60%. Dilute to 30% and distill a third time, making cuts on this last run. A part of the heads stay present in the product. Also quite some tails. Tails are mostly filtered out by a 5 week filtration with activated carbon. Filtration is supposed to take place at around 45%. After you filter out the activated carbon, dilute to 38 to 40% nd let it rest for another 5 weeks.
Ketel one is in practice since the year 1575. Originally it is a genever (geneva/Dutch Gin) producer. Their vodka initiative is a way to get into the American market place, since nobody in the US of A drinks geneva anymore since abolition. And they succeeded. They get great reviews.
Personally, I think you will learn to do better than them. By using a VM or LM, you can make a more pure drink. But with less taste. If a vodka with some taste is what you are after, you can follow the approach in the first alinea, but take slightly more conservative middle cuts. And only 3 weeks of carbon filtering (one table spoon per liter of 45%). It will give you a drink with the taste profile you look for, but with less head aches.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
Okay, Mr. P!
So I have a 50 liters pot still. The pot still head can be replaces with an old style CM column. And I have a hand made 10 liters alambic, a 4 liters alembic, an airstill, a pharmaceutical glass column in an oil bath with a magnetically induced stirr device ...
O sorry, you talking to the OP-er, right?
Just kidding.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
It was just too tempting to "misinterprit" your question, Mr. P! BTW, the fire piss half product (96.5% and cinamon sticks) are progressing nicely. Do they really need a month? I am tempting to try after two weeks already. Greedy basterd, I am.
Sorry off topic.

Re: Looking to Make Vodka
Nice little boka you have there. That will make you some nice vodka. I personaly would try the all bran recipe to start with. It sounds like it mite be right up your ally. And good wash to learn how to run that still on. Then maybe later on do some experimenting with the UJSSM using wheat instead of corn. Then later on progressing into AG wheat.
I love the all bran. But I'm moving towards AG. And after tasting my AG wheat ran off as vodka. I'm sticking with AG. But in your case the sugarheads are far easier to learn with.
Odin. It's your makins. You do how you please. Truthfully if I remember right I did mine after three weeks. The first time. I could be wrong? But I'm sure it would be good. Maybe just not as strong. Sory off topic.
