Sight Glass For a 2" Bokabob

Post by moe fishwater »

I got this sight glass for my Bokabob reflux column. Originally, I had planned on installing it up top just under the condenser, but now I think I may install it at the base of the column . . . before the packing. Besides the fact that this feature is totally unnecessary, anybody want to way in on the placement of this beauty? Oh, the condensing head is detachable via threaded fittings.

Cheers,

M.F.

Where did you buy that beauty? I have seen it on ebay but was way too pricey with postage. Would cost me 130 bucks. I would put it under the reflux spiral, so I could see thre stuff dripping. Please keep us posted with pics. Dying to have a sight glass like this. :)

I would put it under the coil and take off with some packing in the bottom of the sight glass so I could watch the distillate pool up and bubble. just my two cents.

Can you explain how the glass is sealed? I just aquired 4 sticks of 1" pyrex that I'm wondering what to do with.

It looks like the one Mile hi sells for $69. Me I would put it ontop just under the reflux condenser.

yep, that's the one. I'm not sure what it's sealed with. Here's the link to the site: http://www.milehidistilling.com/2-sight ... lamp-ends/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow Thanks for the input. What's a simple method for insuring the packing material remains in the tube?

just make it like the rest of the column personally I just buy the scotch bright ss scrubbys stretch them a little and shove them in you want them tight enough to not move but you are able to breath through easily.

I got a hold of a s#!+pile of copper pest control mesh. I was going to roll that up into rolls to stuff down the column, but now I'm thinking it may cause it to choke a little bit. Will this be too much? I can roll it more loosely, but it causes an empty space down the center. We don't want that do we?

I am completing my 3" VM/LM hybrid and am placing mine at the top of the column, but before the T-joint leading to the condensor. I want to see the liquid as it falls back down. All put together it looks pretty cool, can't wait to run it. Here is another place to get a 2" sight glass that I found in my search, but they only offer 2" and smaller. 2" is listed at $60, which isn't bad.

Put a triclamp connection below the condenser above the take off. And one just below the takeoff. That way you can clamp it in either place. And at the bottom of the column.

I think I would add a bubble plate to it and put it under the column.

I use a sight at the base of my columns...You can see the difference between the methanol and ethenols, it is day and night differance. With that in mind i have a rotating funnel inside the still (with a p-trap so vapor can not escape, only liquid) right under the sight glass. This catches the dripping methanol and it is piped to a receiver out side the still...Works great for pulling the nasty s out at start up....Once the ethenols start vaporizing off the wash (you can see the difference in the sight glass) I rotate the funnel to the side and let the still run as usual....Eliminates the guess work out of getting the methanol out of product....Attached is a picture of one I built that had a drum trap on it. I installed this with a valve on it on the outside of the still so when you are done using it you rotate the funnel and close the valve...
