pot still not producing, and I think ive checked every thing

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

pot still not producing, and I think ive checked every thing

Post by workinjoe »

Ok so here what I got going on. Seeing as how im only looking to make a lil for myself I went with the simple pot still design. I went off HD suggestions, bought an 16 quart ss stock pot with lid, 1/2 copper tube , a bucket condenser with 7 coils it has a lil pump so i can cont. pump cool sink water to it and remove the warm water. Also has a drain spout for easy clean up. I went and bought food grade silicone (yes they do have it found this after a couple of days of looking) and put a bead all around the lid so when i clamp it to the pot it seals it tight. I took a thermometer with a scale of 0-220 degrees F and drill a hole into the lid and siliconed that in place. Then I drill an hold for my flow through fitting that i can connect my pipe to and put it in and siliconed that in place. Then my 1/2 tube rises approx. 9 inches and then slopes down about 3 feet down to my condenser bucket that has 7 coils. For my heating element im using electirc stove top. For saftey I have the kitchen fan running, another lil floor fan running a fire extinguser by kitchen door away from the stove and a primed garden hose right out side. Now I have cleaned the bot first by boiling water in it then cleaning with baking soda then boiling it again and fianlly water/vinegar mix. I also cleaned my copper fitting and tubing with water/vingear mix. Now the problem I am having is that on my test run I can bring the temp (high-heat) 215 and no water trickles out. I got scared and turned it off. I checked for leaks with a mirrior and flashlight and not a one. I can feel the first bit of the tube warm but still never trickles out. I took it of the fitting and checked all the way down my tube for a kink and nothing. Next I tryed water/old wine mix..again nothing.. no leaks again. Then I tryed a simple mash it went from one 140 to 175 superquick and spit out alil bit of the mash .. smelled straight like alcohol (forgot to put my "boiling chip" --marbles-- in). Then I tryed a tryed and true recipe found off HD site ( both washes and fermented fully before these runs). Again brought it up to temp. 178 and let sit for 30 mins (set at the stove regulating it to keep it right around 178) still nothing . I also started my cool water flow at around 140.. I checked again for leaks with mirror and flashlight and again sealed tight. The tube has gotten warm all the way up till the bend going down to the condenser.. so any ideas.. im lost the only thing i can think of is that my stock pot has a flat lid instead of the dome. Is that my problem?! man would my great great greatdad be dissapointed can even get the simple design to work.
