Quick question Electic boiler

Post by Mcfly »

I just purchased a 7.5 gallon electric boiler from Rainierdistillers, do I need to get a phase angle controller for this?

Is there a particular one for 110v or does it matter?

I would recommend a phase angle controller. But there are others that will work. Maybe not last as long. Or work as good.

Piling on, what about this heat element from Mile hi?

http://www.milehidistilling.com/heater- ... 500w-115v/

It has a thermostat and per a video I recall seeing from them, the rotating dial can adjust accordingly. I assume one would still need a phase angle controller as the element likely gets to temperature by going "all on" and then "off" until it hits temperature? Sorry if that's confusing. I'm still trying to understand all this stuff  :econfused:

Disregard. The three topics in the must read forum addressed my question, I think. Now it's a matter of figuring out whether or not I want to run 220v in my condo or if I maybe go the route of a 110v controller with maybe 2 elements. I'll never get a still built or bought at this rate of research! :problem:

I researched and read around here for 6 months before I got my first one built and ran. Not to mention the 2 months before I found HD. Doing good research and learning as much as you can before you dump a whole bunch of money on a still. Will save you many headaches. And make it a lot easier to run the first few times. Rushing leads to many headaches and possibly wasting money on a still that isn't really what you needed or want. Take your time. This isn't a race. It can be a nice life long hobby. There will ne plenty of time to make all kinds of stuff. The better prepared you are. The less time it takes to work through the learning curve.

Would this Phase Angle Controller Build work for the 110 Boilder
SSRMAN-1P SSR - http://compare.ebay.com/like/1509465207 ... s&var=sbar" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Crydom Solid State Relay d2425-10
25k ohm Potentiometer
I found this build on the forums before cant seem to find the post now.

And another question
Would I be able to run boiler without the Controller? I will still build the controller just wondering if I can run it in the meantime to learn more about distilling.

If you're running 110, why not just use the router speed controller? Yes, you could run without, but you can't control it.
