Soldering/Braising issues

Post by HippyHiker »

Hey all,

I've got an issue to throw out here for advice. I'm using a keg as my pot and recently one of my spawn felt it necessary to shoot it with their pellet gun at point blank and put two hair line cracks in it. I only have an oxy/accet. tourch, no mig or tig. I know there is special flux for braising rods. What I am asking is, do any of you chaps have an easier way to fix my poor pot or do I need to seek another boiler? I'm in a bit of a time crunch as I've got about 15 gals. of mash bubbling away as we speak. I've done my reading and know I also need to avoid cadmium nd other heavy metals. What can I use that is food grade? As always, thanks for your time and input.

@Durace11
Heheheehehe now thats funny

I would use a 45% silver with a high temp brazing flux. The 15% sticks are not for SS but will work with the right flux. I have had a problem with them when temp rises, expansion is different and cracks at the braze seam.

Thanks guys, and just an FYI, the pellet gun has met an untimely demise courtesy of the aforementioned cutting torch!!! Will a simple braise handle the pressure? I don't want a vapor leak! Thanks again.

WTFlip kind of pellet gun was it? That could crack a keg? :shock:

If you take it to a weld shop. They would probably throw a small weld on it for next to nothing. If not nothing.

Well now its a broken pellet gun!!! I'm leary of taking it to a weld shop, for fear of raising some questions. It WAS a .22 caliber Co2 gun. But like I said, it's gone on to the big shooting range in the sky.....as long as I can make the repair myself I don't see a need to take it to a shop and have any questions asked. Thanks guys.
