Giving to others?
Are you cooking tomorrow? I am going to cook for 100. A local homeless camp has been flooded out with recent heavy rains. These are not typical street people. Some have jobs and cars but cant afford a home. They avoid shelters because of those other types. It is a sad sign of the times.
While enjoying a ham dinner tomorrow with my kids, girlfriend and mother, I am going to cook as many turkeys as I can get my hands on and then deliver them. I have a large computer controlled glass annealing oven that can cook 12 turkeys at a time maybe more. I can afford maybe 4-5. My girlfriend, son and sister are in for a turkey each. I spoke with Mashy, he is in.
My business is scary slow this year and I am spending money faster than making it. I am still luckier than them. I could use a little good Karma.

Sounds like you are working for some good Karma. You deserve it from this act.

MR, I am in Seattle, I will go over to QFC and buy one or two turkeys and bring them over if you have room to cook a few more. Maybe some members on the east coast that were not effected by Sandy could pick up the cause. This will definitely give me more reason to be thankful this year.

Thanks Bushman.
If I am not here leave them outside my shop. I will cook them. I am going to drive down to the camp this morning to set things up for tomorrow than have to go to Lynnwood for a few hours. They are down by the 1st ave bridge on W Marginal wy. Depending on how many we get I may start cooking tonight.

Great initiative, Mash! Local makes it even better, maybe. Remember an undertaking from my friends and me. We helped poor city children in Paramaribo City, Suriname (South Americ). We sponsored a school initiative for teaching how to grow their own vegetables. Great succes. Until the crops grew big and the rest of the population stole everything. We are currently sponsoring an initiative to set up very high fences ... Dunno if it will make a difference.

Just got back from the camp. Its cold, wet and miserable there. They have a kitchen coordinator that I spoke with. Population is about 100. The best price I have found so far is .99c a pound for frozen turkey. I am going to go back and buy eight turkeys, bring them home and start thawing them in my bath tub with running water. Those and the two from BM should be about 200lbs of meat. 2 lbs per person should be enough. I have decided to cook baked potatoes too. Their cheap and easy and will remain hot for them.

Good for you MR and Bushman, I'd be glad to throw in if I lived just a little closer, still struggling for the legal tender today.

Really a coincidence, ran into MR at the store as he was getting the Turkeys, the store through in 3 bags of potatoes this is a great project. I witnessed MR's generosity in the past and this is just one more example of helping others less fortunate.

Funny. Two guys starring at turkeys, One me, one of them turns out to be you and you live 90 miles away. Thanks for chipping in Amigo! I have ten turkeys taking a cold bath together to thaw out.
The store donated 50 lbs of spuds. I will foil wrap them and cook them all together too.
When I returned to the store to make the purchase I parked on the side of the building to make loading easier. I got a $50 parking ticket for parking in a fire zone. (in a private lot)
I guess the old adage is true. No good deed goes un punished.

Re: Giving to others?
One of the local news stations picked up on the story. They wanted to be here at 7 AM when I am putting all the turkeys in the oven. They find it an interesting story that I am able to cook all 10 turkeys at the same time in glass blowing equipment. I told them they could have pictures when they were coming out of the oven at 1 PM as long as they kept the story about the camp and not my glass blowing studio. My neighbor just chipped in $20 for one as well as my girlfriend, son, daughter, sister and likely my mom. Mashy is in and Bushman rocks with two!
We stopped at the local cash and carry to buy aluminum pans, foil, napkins, plastic silver ware and plates. Great news. Sugar prices are down! I bought 100 lbs under $50. ( heck, I was there )
Have a great Thanksgiving my fellow Americans! To all have a great day!!
Let me know if you want pictures!

Re: Giving to others?
We got up early and got the birds in the oven. I have it set at 350 degrees. It should take 4-5 hours. We will go out and rotate them top to bottom in a couple of hours.
One half of the spuds. I will put the 50 lbs in the oven an hour before launch. My oven has six 4000 watt elements and usually is run at 950 degrees. The computer control and thermocouple allows for accurate control at any temp. I have cooked my thanksgiving dinner in it the last ten years. I am happy to have an oven large enough to pull this off.
I will get some pictures when they are done. I probably wont have time to post them until tonight. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Looks great. 950 degrees is hot enough to bake a Neapolitan style pizza.

KING 5 News has called and will have a camera guy here at noon to film them coming out of the oven and they plan on having a crew at the homeless camp. Crap. I wasnt looking for attention. Maybe they will just shoot the birds and my cute girlfriend. I think I may start drinking early. It sure as hell is going to be an interesting day.

You better hide anything that resembles a still, and I would say that this jester is for the homeless and I would like to be listed as a Good Samaritan but please don't mention my name in the paper.mash rookie wrote:KING 5 News has called and will have a camera guy here at noon to film them coming out of the oven and they plan on having a crew at the homeless camp. Cans of paint, dustsheets, a new dress and some expensive perfume. That should be enough to keep the prying eyes away from the back of the shop. Just make sure to ask your girlfriend if she wouldn't mind helping out.mash rookie wrote:KING 5 News has called and will have a camera guy here at noon to film them coming out of the oven and they plan on having a crew at the homeless camp. Not suggesting for a minute that she distracts them from the good things you are doing, just that she directs the cameras to see what you want them to see.

Re: Giving to others?
We pulled it off!! Thank you Bushman, Mashy, Peachy, My kids, mom and neighbors that pitched in for turkeys. 10 20lb Turkeys. 50lbs baked potatoes, 10 pies and a gallon of gravy. We were there exactly when I said, dropped off everything without fan fare and returned home to enjoy a very, very satisfying dinner together.
What a great day!
Actually Myles the camera guy watched her carving turkey quite closely. She was looking hot. I guess severall of her friends saw her on the 11 oclock news last night. I was passed out cold.Cans of paint, dustsheets, a new dress and some expensive perfume. That should be enough to keep the prying eyes away from the back of the shop. Re: Giving to others?
Thanks Hook. It is very satisfying to help. It keeps things in perspective for me. Even though I am an artist that is just getting by, I have much more than many others. We may try to put together a meal for them on Christmas. I will talk to my family about it soon.
I sponsor a child through World Vision in Senegal. For $30 a month you can change a families life. We bought a $75 goat for her family one year as an extra gift. She wrote that their status in the village was elevated with the wealth of owning a goat and new clothes. I started 6 years ago when Rosalie was 8 years old. Now 14 yo, I made a personal commitment to sponsor her until she turns 18.
World Vision has a great record of returning the highest percentage of donations to the people. As Christmas gifts I am considering sponsoring two more children in my kids names so that they may correspond with letters and share the joy I get. Business is slow but I might be able to pull it off.

Re: Giving to others?
We sponsored a young girl through World Vision years ago and when the person did not live up to their required commitment World Vision actually told us they were no longer going to sponsor them. Kind of nice knowing they weren't just pocketing the money!
