Hey fellas, what about blending?
I know the big boys do it, but because of heads, I think their stuff is crap. Maybe there is it some good stuff out there, but I've never been able to afford it... but many of em do blend different variables products together for a final product. My question is,... any advice on blending???
Lets see now...
I've got some:
millet (ifn I member right, that had some sugar in it, damn it)
barley, (malted myself, first real malt, guess I did ok, kinda brisk)
Wheat, (neutral, I like it alot)
Rye, (hmm, kinda, yea, I like it, kinda bitter but its good)
All bran sugar head, that's good stuff, (still hadn't been introduced to Rads sister (Gerber) maybe one a these days)...
Of course I have some BW, (my ol faithful)
Some SF, (been aging awhile)
And yea, there's a few gallons of UJ, still around here somewhere...
But, what are you fellas ideas on blending? Hum? Is there a rule to follow like burbon being51% corn, for blending???
What about blending?

Re: What about blending?
I am drinking some 50/50 rye and UJSSM now and it's pretty damn good. I have 3 gals each of SF and UJSSM aging now that I will blend some of. I have a theory that a blend of these two will be quite good. I will advise after blending.

i would either do it how ralfy showed it in one of his vlogs, or - less involving - by just having a 'living bottle'.wacabi1 wrote:Hey fellas, what about blending?

the wheat, the bw and the all bran could be your base (or whichever you like really). mix them in a bottle and let rest for a week.
add equal amounts of this to a bunch of nosing glasses and start adding different amounts of the other, more flavourful spirits. let the covered glasses sit overnight before tasting. take notes. once you have a winning combination make your 'big' blend and age it for a few months.

But before you go, yea, blends are something that I haven't heard talked about much here. Evediently blends are important for good whisky, but I don't have a clue how...
I have made several single grain whiskys in order to learn the tastes of the different grains. I'm getting there... But ide really like to hear Dunder, big R, RD, et al on blending...
I know its Friday night and lots a newbies to bottle feed, maybe this is a more middle of the week topic?...

Re: What about blending?
Thanks kbold, I have reservations about using any sugar wash in a final whisky blend. Even though I do really like my neutrals...

Thats a great start on your blending excercise BG. UJSSM really begins to take on a whole new bouquet and tast when you get to the 4th generation.
Try blending with a Sweetfeed/All Bran and a barley all grain when you get round to it. Your in for a real treat...

Re: What about blending?
Ok, so this weekend I kinda played a drinking game. In my stainless cup I put a shot of everything on my shelf then filled with ice. I did this to see what flavors I could detect.
Hmmm
Millet seems to be the strongest to my taste, its like I smell it as I taste...
SF yep, that's SF
Rye? Maybe or is that barley???
I can't taste anything else...

Re: What about blending?
I have some Barley Gerber thats been on oak for a couple months. Maybe Ill mix a bottle of that with my 5th Gen UJ. I also have some all bran that I may try that with too. My UJ is something completly different from all the other flavors. Something I wasnt expecting. I love it, my wife likes it and a few friends love and like it. Maybe a mix, maybe barley, all bran, or oat will change the profile and put some smiles on some faces. I did for the first time make apple pie with my UJ. Totally different than my neutral or all bran tries. Got a little too lit last night from it. LOL not sure if I want to drink tonight.
