recharring gibbs barrel

Post by texshinner72 »

bought a 3gal gibbs last year ran five batches throught it last one was not wanting to finsh out. im sure i could have left it in for a year or so and it would have. but i decided to try and recharre it and it was simple. read on how to do it and about 50% said it was easy and the other said not to do it i hope it does not give the shine a funny tast. i guess we will see but for every one out there i defintly recomend trying it . if anyone has done this please let me now what your outcome was as far as flavor and how long you burned it for .thanks

Glad you posted this i have 2 - 6.5 gals coming up for refreshing. Will give it a try. Worst case is toasted oak sticks for glass aging rum. :)

Guys,
How would you do that? I assume you would have to knock the metal bands up loose, then remove the head, char the inside with a propane torch, etc, then reinstall the head and knock the bands down until tight. Is that right?
I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has actually done this and any tips they could offer.

Thanks for your post; I'm pleased to hear the keg went back together fine. I'm wondering if when you used 120 proof to burn it out if any new char was created or just the shine soaked in the old char was burning off but producing little new char. I'm thinking about, after I get the cap off, to lightly scrap the old depleted charr off and use my propane torch to re-char the inside similar to how I do my white oak char sticks.
