Little Help Please...
hello.. New to these forums here..
i have a small problem..that could, turn into a large problem very quickly if i dont try and solve it. Before i get into that, i would like to say, for informational purposes, im a newb distiller. Ive been interested in it for a long time, and finally im doing something about it.
unfortunately i got ahead of myself. i first started the batch without making the still, mainly b/c i have a certain number of days remaining on my break off from work, so i wanted it to get going with the yeast and during that build the still...
so, i have a 5 gallon container that is going good. originally i wanted to keep it 5 gal. the cooker was going to be a 5 gal stock pot... now, the problem i ran into, is, i was so excited cause i found a 5 gal stock pot for cheap... i was so excited that i forgot to make sure it was a stainless steel stock pot.... so i took that crap back, and got a stainless steel stock pot.
ok so heres the thing. the stock pot i got is a 2 gallon stock pot. after buying the rest of the materials i didnt have enough for a 5 gal pot.
i have a couple of different questions, but more immediately, i have 5 gal of some goodness getting ready and have a 2 gal pot to run it in...im wondering...
with everything set up, and ready to go.... after i run the first 2 gal through the still, do i then stop, clean the still then start over and run another 2 gal
or
once the first 2 gal is through, can i remove the liquid in the pot and put more in and run it through it ?
im kinda stuck because idk if i can run the entire 5 gal though 2 gal at a time .,,,,,,,,,,,,, also, when you first start producing you discard the first part of it that comes out.... why, is that part bad? i know cause it has methanol and other stuff in it, but im wondering what makes that first part bad?
is it bad because of the heating up process or ???
also, i know you never run with an aluminum pot, but im wondering why is aluminum ok for cooking food but not alcohol?
and... my 5 gal once producing the first 50-60ml i was gonna discard, as its the first part to it, but now that i dont have a 5 gal pot, but a 2 gal, how many ml would be bad?
ive got about a day or so remaining till its ready to run, so any info about the running process will be appreciated. thank you in advance.

I'm gona be blunt. You need to put it in park. The questions you have asked should have already been researched before you got to this point. The bad thing is by you post I can tell you have questions you don't even know you have. All these questions van be answered by doing what many of us think should be required reading. I'm talking about the must read new distiller reading lounge. By reading this section you will get the needed answers to the questions you don't even know you have yet.
Your ferment will wait. You will need something for your sacrificial alcohol cleaning run anyway. So it can wait till the still is built. Take your time don't rush. This is not a hobby you want to rush. You may be excited. But rushing just makes the learning process more cornfusing.

Re: Little Help Please...
a person wold think help from the forums would actually come, in form of answers like...
yea u can run it a couple of times, or you should clean in between runs... or shit like that.
i got absolutely no help other than... you have questions u dont even know yet... which i dont....
i was only asking an answer to things i was questioning...
thanks for not helping at all.
Oh and while im on the subject of it... i dont think by telling someone they need to read the rest of the forums, to find an answer.. shit i knew that to begin with. i dont care about what its called mash, or the nifty ways to make a still.... or any of that stuff, i only cared about the questions i asked...
oh and something else... this guy here ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-nGbAf81Zs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow ... is called making moonshine 101, which he refers people to home distiller, says you only got to run it once, and your good...
long story short, im a hands on kinda guy, and will learn answers to my problems as i go, like i normally do, ... so ty for not helping me at all. you people didnt even try to fking help. you said Read the Forums.!! i dont give a hot dam about reading the forums... i dont give a hoot why its called mash, or the nifty ways of making a still. what i did notice is that people got answers to their questions if they werent new forum users... so if i was an older forum member i would have gotten answers, but because im not i get... go read the forums. Dont even fuqing reply to this, cause i will never return to see what useless and condescending posts were giving.
couldnt even answer a couple of questions....fuq off

Re: Little Help Please...
I'm sory you feel you didn't get the answer you wanted. And that you don't want to take the time to correctly research for yourself.
Most of your questions can be answered from reading one post.
Novice Guide for Cuts (Pot Still)
http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 46&t=13261
And this one would cover one question.
How long will my wash last before I run it?
http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 46&t=28549
Both of which can be found in the must read new distiller reading lounge. And I say must read for a good reason. Most everything you need to know to run your still safely is contained in that section. And should be read. The questions you are asking make me wonder how much more you don't know. And the test would be covered in that section. And is explained so much better in those threads then we can do here in your thread.
Other notes.
You can't run 2 gallons in a 2 gallon boiler. 1/2 to 3/4 boiler charge should be used.
The bad stuff comes from the same place the alcohol does. The fermentation process.
Aluminum I'm not even going to get into. You can search that answer very easily. And the answer is posted many times over and over and over. It's a dead horse at this point.
Now that I spoon fed you the answers to the questions you asked. Can you maybe do some good research for yourself?
Good luck in your endeavors. I hope you find someone to hold your hand.

Re: Little Help Please...
I remember feeling the same way as ghostbusters2 when I first joined and was just pointed to other references. After hanging out for a while, I totally get it. We literally answer the same 10 questions over and over and over. Don't take it personal, ghostbusters2. Just take what you're given and it'll all make sense eventually.
Re: Little Help Please...
Ghostbusters,
The people your telling to f themselves are just trying to keep you from doing something that could wind up poorly, like poisoning, explosions and the following napalm solution, and fire. Best of luck.

Re: Little Help Please...
I think this is the bigger problem that needs to be addressed.ghostbusters2 wrote:

there is no way in hell you can do this hobby safely and correctly by only knowing the stuff you asked. there is more to this then just why isn't alumina safe or how much to fill the boiler. there is a reason we want everyone to read, and its not so we dont answer the same 10 questions over and over. its because as you ask these questions your only getting the small answer.
this is why PP said you have questions you don't even know yet, because as you read and find the answer's to you questions i promises 10 more questions will pop into your head (that is unless you know everything already about distilling)
and there's another small problem and that is new members come here often and fail to read just like yourself, they do a quick search and find what they think is the answer but in fact they have stumbled into some bad unsafe advice like using aluminum for a boiler and think its ok because they failed to read and research as to way things are the way they are. its for your own benefit and for the benefit of any other new member who's gonna read your post.
my opinion is you take PP's advice first off 2nd would be to apologize to one of our trusted mentors and 3rd is to grow some thicker skin. telling people to fuck off because you dont like their opinion is not only rude and childish but super dumb for anyone asking questions and wanting answers

A Prof recently told me you can learn anything you want if you are wiling to do the proper research. I am now also creating my very own biodiesel facility in the Man-Cave. Double duty kind of place.

Re: Little Help Please...
I understand both perspectives here. I got those kind of answers when I first joined. I took heed and read it all. Now I understand why I got them, but the approach needs to have more tact. I felt the same way, and it wasn't until I had read it all that I "got it"
Re: Little Help Please...
This is going no where fast. Please dont clutter up the board with childish responses. If you dont like the answers you are getting try to rephrase them - or take it to PM if you have a problem with another memeber or possibly try to find a mentor. Good luck with your searches and just stay safe.
