piggyback some booze on yer beer

Re: piggyback some booze on yer beer
Hooch, what if your beer had hops in it.. Can you still piggyback from the leftover grains? (I'm not a beer brewer, but my cousin is. And that would be a great method of reusing his spent grains and would only cost me for the sugar)
Re: piggyback some booze on yer beer
Typically you add hops to the boil, not the mash so the spent grain has only been mashed and sparged(washed) clean of most of the sugar. The leftover typically has only a little flavor but probably enough to add some sugar and do a UJSSM style wash.

Re: piggyback some booze on yer beer
Enough flavor leftover to be worth it?
Re: piggyback some booze on yer beer
Actually since this idea came up a few months ago I have only been brewing cider, wine & mead so I haven't tried it but I will give it a go with my next AG beer. I assume it is worth it. Probably something like a multigeneration wash where you have very little new grain in the mix and a lot of old grain that's been mostly depleted. That's me guessing. Also depends on how well the grain was sparged. BIAB leaves a lot in the grain as does batch/fly sparging done poorly/quickly.

Re: piggyback some booze on yer beer
Yall are over-complicating it ...
After you finish the mashing for your beer, dump the grain in a fermenter , add 7 pounds sugar and 5 gallons water, dissolve , pitch yeast at the appropriate temp.
Once the ferment is done (about a week) strain out the grain and charge the boiler with the "beer"
...and throw the grub and train away.
Next time you brew another beer, repeat.
