First 4" Flute

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First 4" Flute

Post by Vapour trails »

Thanks to Old Dog for opening up a new world for all of us. You should be proud of what you accomplished...
Heres what I come up with using the style of OD's MK2 for inspiration.
-4" column and 3 hand built easy flange site glasses
-3 bubble plates with 2" upcomers, 3" (handmade) caps and 2- 1/2" downcomers per plate
-6" reflag with 7- 1/2" tubes
-2" scalloped take off pipe
-3" by 14" shotgun condenser with 4- 3/4" tubes
-26 gallon boiler
Apart from the cooling lines and parrot, there were no fittings used in the construction process. I also soft soldered everything (although tricky to do). She will do a consistent 90%+ at over a gallon per hr with full flavour on KS's sweet feed. And as u can see by the pic below, with the plates filled with packing, 95%+ neutral at relatively the same production (kind of tough to get the packing out after neutral runs).

Congratulations. It looks good. What did you use for packing?

Thanks MR. I used 1/4" rashig rings. There are 6" between the plates so each plate holds roughly a litre of packing. But i'm thinking of adding a triclamp between the plate tree and thermo. I'd like to just put a packed column below the deflag instead of messing around removing the rings for whiskey runs.

So you just place the packing in with the bubblecaps?

Looks good by the way.

Thanks Hobby and Yes PP. I fill it through the site glass ports. The thought of flooding occurred to me but doesn't seem to be an issue. The down comers appear to still be very functional even with a few rashig rings in them.
