OK Been seeing this in a few post mostly referring to ice/ice water when using a worm. Now everybody that says something about "shock cooling " say research it or look it up. Well I have been with no luck so please will someone enlighten me so I know what the heck there talking about. And here is a link from the site about using ice water with a worm.
when I first started reading about distilling this mention of "shock cooling" came up. I have done endless searches and have yet to find any supporting data what so ever.No side by sides, no lab data, no evidence at all. Is it possible theis is just a "we've always done it this way" thing? An urban legend of sorts? Inquiring minds want to know.
I dont buy the whole "sucks air up the condenser and condenses the moisture in the air" theory at all. The still by design always maintains positive pressure once the wash is above ambient temps.
Not being a dissagree'er just not buyin it.
Well if that dont beat all. That was the whole answer in a nut shell. Thanks for linking that for me. Guess I didnt journey far enough into it to see that post. Im just running a 4gal. pot still with a liebig, and I too have been running ice water from a 5gal. bucket. I'll have to change things up a little there. Thanks again.
So today I put a needle valve on the out flow of my condenser to control the water flow. Will monitor the cooling temps by touch, cold in on the bottom to room temps at the top. Will adjust as needed for proper dripping rate. Being as I have a small pot still I run it low an slow. Lets see how it goes.
If your doing a stripping run let her rip! Then slow down on your spirit run to get good cuts, toss fores from both runs. Some say no need to toss fores on the second run, but even if you do its just going to be some real headsy stuff! (I know I made that word up, headsy, but you know what i mean!)
"yeah? yeah? the maple flavored kind?" A dog on you tube.
Fair enough. Got a few more runs to do before I get to my true sprite run. Working with a 4gal pot is a pain in the rear but wanted to get my feet wet and check the water before I dove in. Ran yesterday with that needle valve installed on my condenser and couldnt tell much difference, other than my cooling water warmed-up faster and the ice melted faster than before. No bigg deal as I have a stock pile of 3/4 gal. blocks saved up in the freezer. Looking for a Keg to get started on a bigger and better still but having a hard time finding one cheap. Wouldnt think it would be that hard being I live near a big city in the mid-west. Have a few more options that i need to check into. A few salvage yards in the area Im going to check out later this week.
