First run of sweet feed

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.

First run of sweet feed

Post by TheSticky1970 »

Just did my first sweet feed run on Sunday. It turned out good. I put one gallon of product in the keg for aging. I started the next run of sour mash right away. It was bubbling in a couple of hours. I think I'm going to add a thump keg to my pot still before the next run. My short column still head only got me about a hundred proof. I would be OK with that because it's tasty, but it will loose some while aging. Also I had some solids come through that I had to let run through the coffee filter right after the parrot. Good first run all in all though. :D

Good to hear that stuff you make is turning out good to you  . I've wanted to try sweet feed for a long time and maybe in a while I'll do. Funny that your shine is coming out 100 proof I've run a 50L keg with 70cm column (5/4" OD) but packed with scrubbers and foreshots are 170 proof, hearts 140-130 proof I don't collect below 80-70 proof (no thumper) still charged with 10 ABV sugar wash. Any way nice to hear that sweet feed makes a good results. Cheers.

I was considering just adding a bit more column to to my still head so that I could add some packing. Who knows, I may do that. I don't want a real high ABV, just something to play with.

just adding some packing to a pot still head wont get ya anywhere . and theres nothing wrong with ending up with 100 proof good drink after cuts.
today marks the dawn of a new error.

Just had a taste of that whiskey that has been oaking up for only 4 days. What a difference some keg time makes! I think that with some real age time this will be a great product.

Making some progress now. I added a thump keg to my still to bring up the ABV. The flavor was just way to strong with just the pot and I found that it didn't oak up well either. We are good now though. 150 proof in the barrel and smells and tastes wonderful. I can't believe how stupid simple the thump keg is, and how well it works. I'm now looking for some recipes to try that I can mix with the sweet feed whisky that may add some warmth to the flavor.
