Story about old timer busted in 2011

Post by S-Cackalacky »

My wife passed this link on to me from yesterday's Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/va- ... ingtonpost" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Can't help but feel bad for the old man, but maybe he shouldn't be asking God stupid questions. As my Italian wife would say, "He put the "malukias" (sp?) on himself.". Which means, roughly translated, don't say something that can bring bad luck by the mere mention of it.

Just sayin',

I liked the article, Love sounds like a better person than my opinion of Popcorn Sutton. I think his penalty was fair and the positive is now writers have a source for a bit of history as it sounds like he flew under the radar for years.

Good article, thanks for posting.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Thanks for the article.

I can't believe he got a 12 month (suspended) sentence for just having the still. I know it was suspended, but that sets a pretty bold precedent.

I'm also amazed that this was his first run in with the law.

Jesus said something like, "Give unto God what is God's and unto Cesar what is Cesar's.". That day out by his still, he was talking to the wrong entity - got his answer from Cesar.

I agree about the gun thing. The old guy was a wounded war veteran for God sakes and didn't deserve to be frightened and humiliated like that. I'm sure those agents probably knew who he was and the kind of person he was. But then, what can you expect from a couple of self-righteous government thugs. This just goes to show what kind of lack of respect these butt heads have for the community and culture they're inserted into.

I think there's a big difference between someone stillin for personal use and stillin for sale. Anyone partaking in illegal activity willingly accepts the risks of doing so. Age means nothing to the law nor does the fact that he's a war veteran.
I'm sure i'll take some flak for my opinion but really, what does being 83 years old have to do with it?
As far as guns drawn, I'm sure there's a history in the area that at one time made that a necessary evil.

I respect people like this that did what they had to do for their family to survive. Has anyone read the book?

"A Night of Makin' Likker" sells for $19.95 and can be found online at Lulu.com and in several locations in Franklin County, including the Artisan Center and the museum of the Franklin County Historical Society, both in Rocky Mount. The museum also sells "Why Moonshine?" by Mills for $17.95. The museum's phone number is 540-483-1890.

Seems like it would be a good book!

Goose eye, I admire a man who can live amongst all this temptation and still live a clean life.
