1st run proof question??
I posted this in the wrong the first time in Recearch & Theroy sorry. I need some advice.Made my first run over the weekend.wanted to try fleshmans yeast i purchast from Kroger.Made my wash 10 days later it was done working.Strained it added it to my cooker.Heated to 175 with in 20 min had product dripping.I recovered 6qt jars out of 10gal of wash.My question is the proof of my 1st jar was 120 proof 2nd jar 115 3rd jar 110 and so on till i reached 85 proof on my last jar, and it was barely drippind.Does that sound correct tooya yall.Would more corn in my wash give me higher proof right out of the cooker or is brewers yeast the key to higher proof.I have heard people in this fourm say stay away from turbo yeast.Just wanted your thoughts.Oand after mixing all my jars toghter in bucket. Results where 100 proof.its hard to mix apple juice with that and not bring the proof way down. What am i doing wrong....THANKS for the help.

not sure what your expecting out of a pot still as 120 proof is good licker, yes you can get higher and with more experience probably will, first you cant run a pot still by temps as you stated you heated it to 175, the pot should be heated to boil till product appears then input power adjusted to control output stream ( broken pencil lead stream) just dripping means it was running too slow. you stopped at 85 proof you could have collected more i collect down to between 20 and 30% which is 40 to 60 proof. the reason we stay away from turbos is because it stresses the yeast and can impart nasty flavors into your product.

Re: 1st run proof question??
the yeast and grain in a wash/mash? has little to do with the proof of the the distillate.
the amount of sugars determine the amount of alcohol in wash therefore determine how much product.not the proof.but it can be "pushed" to far and you can end up with less.
it appears you have the wrong type of still to make vodka/neutral.it can be done but you will need to run several times.

Re: 1st run proof question??
Thats what I get on a striping run pot still. 60% =120 proof and drops by each mason jar ,, Now save it all up spirit run with 5 gallons of 40% feints and you will get up around 80% 160 proof

You got 10 gallons up to 175 in 20 mins?
When you start getting likker out of your condenser
turn the heat down to a small stream if stripping,
or fast drip for spirit run.For spirit runs collect in small
containers.I use 1/2 pint jars, and put only 200 ml
in each.Some use 20+ jars, i usually use 15 to 20.
Let them air out for 2 days, and then taste a small
sample from each jar starting in the middle. Use the
jars you like and save the rest for next run
