Found very odd JD barrel with grooves

Found very odd JD barrel with grooves
Saw this Jack Daniels 1/2 barrel at a Lowes. The grooves are very precisely cut. Anybody know the story behind this?

Hmmm, I guess even ol JD reads this forum, those look like Holy Bear sticks since they're cut cross grain...
