Ujsm and sweet feed mix in a small barrel.
I have a 3 5L barrels and one is full of Ujssm and one is full of sweet feed whiskey. Im on the 7th gen of both and I'm thinking of filling my 3rd barrel with a mix of both and I think it would be a tasty drop. Does anyone think different?

Sounds good! Small barrels, so don't over oak!

The two with Ujssm and sweet feed are really tasty after 6 weeks. I think I will pull them out soon.

I would say it should be pretty good. I've read where a lot of people have added small amounts of sweet feed to their UJ wash and liked the flavor that came through. I would think it would make a nice backset for subsequent runs.

I'm glad I read this post. I have three 3Liter barrels coming in soon. How long do you think would be a good time to have them in there oaking? Shoot I was planning on 6months to a year, if I can pull em sooner, that just equals fun all around.Odin wrote:Sounds good! Small barrels, so don't over oak!

You can pool them of sooner, but then they still need time to develop on glass.

Re: Ujsm and sweet feed mix in a small barrel.
I posted this same question of a UJSSM and SF blend several weeks ago, please keep us informed of how this blend turns out. I suspect, given the different qualities of each, this blend could be really nice. A related question for the old timers: I have 3 gal of UJ in a charred keg now and also 3 gals of SF just out of the keg and on glass. After each is charred and finish aged in glass I plan on blending some of them. My question: How would the results of blending these two properly charred and aged whiskey differ from blending the two styles in the white, then charring and finishing the blend on glass? Has anybody done a 1/2 UJ and 1/2 SF wash from the wash stage on?

Trying by tasting is best. It depends on how new your barrel is and how it is charred. Others with more experience in barrel ageing should chime in to give you a more definate answer.

Aging is a set of complex chemical reactions that involve both compounds from the wood and the spirits; and for quality it's something that only occurs over an extended period of time. With small barrels your going to get wood saturation in a relative short period of time, for 2-3 L barrels about 4-6 weeks; with a 5 L barrel 6-8 weeks. However, this short time frame is insufficient for the chemical reaction to complete so allowing the reactions to continue in glass becomes part of the aging process. Depending on temperature, in my experience, a minimum of 9-12 months is required for the process to approach completion, and longer than that is even better.Odin wrote:Trying by tasting is best.
