Hi All
Might be a dumb question but,,, Has anyone tried using anything other than toasted oak? Oak is rare in my area but I have access to lots of Maple that I could toast. I see that Crown Royal has a maple whiskey version available commercially . Any thoughts before I screw up a few quarts of my new hobby??

Most age with oak, I've seen some that use cherry, some with apple, some with maple.
I guess it all boils down to personal taste.

Well, a while back I decided to try a twist on an All-Bran. I aged on toasted oak chips from the homebrew store, along with some lemon and orange peel. It made for a very pleasant drink after a few months!

well,,, since posting this, and being winter in Alberta. I have went and bought a bag of Jack Daniels smoker chips. I put about a quarter of a bag into some ( iffy) shine that I produced and left it for 3 weeks. All I can say is WOW.. I had never tasted Jack, but was delighted with what came out of my jar after such a short time.. I went to the local store and bought some factory Jack and all I can say is I now like them both.. If this is corn whiskey, bring it on..

If you have access to sugar maple, give that a try. That's what JD filters their stuff thru before aging.
