Picking out a barrel.

Post by Countryboyreese »

Hey guys. I need some help picking out a barrel. I was looking at a 5 liter barrel. http://redheadoakbarrels.com/aging-barr ... g-barrels/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow This is the barrel I was looking at. Anyone have experience with them? Anyone have other suggestions? I was planning on ordering one tonight or tomorrow. Thanks.

Five liter seems awfully small.

That barrel looks like its been varnished, it's shiny. That would make me really wonder about the quality of the cooperage. Lousy coopers will use reeds and varnishes to hep make the barrel seal up.

A Gibbs barrel is hard to beat.

Is that barrel toasted or charred?

There are several good sources for small barrels.

You won't get any better than a Gibbs Brothers barrel.

I would consider that Redhead barrel to be a decoration rather than a real, built with generations of family experience, American grown white oak, American made whiskey barrel.

Cheap import barrels could be made outta anything... old pallets... some scrapped lumber... who knows what. Redhead is a cheap import barrel.

If you get good enough at distilling to want a barrel, get the real deal. Get a Gibbs.
