"wacabi1-any ideas on the tree? how did you know about scars ?"

Cause of me blood, Osage... I'd bet its not pointing to the still site though, its pointing to the water source... Well, I guess based on the size (age kinda), it could be pointing to the "Fire Water" source

I think there have been some papers written about pointer trees. I've never read any though. Jes know what me paw taught me...

Em trees are like modern day road signs, but thays in the woods. There's prolly an ol trail near that tree...

Edit to add, there should be a scare underneath too. A notch for the tree to fall into.
By the way, does that scare look zig zaggy to you? Kinda like lightning? Hmmm...

Interesting thread, my dad's family is from Johnston County. My grandpappy was a preacher in and around Kenly. He grew up around the Little River near Niagra church on Bagly Rd/Rain's X-Road area. I played and fished along the river as a kid. My grandma's brother was said to work for Percy at one time. I once listened to my grandaddy and his best friend talk about their dads making apple brandy and they said the sheriff would even stop by for a drink back in the day. They knew folks had to make a living. Very small world.

I'm surprised I didn't stumble upon a still along the river, or I might have and just walked on past it not knowing. I've seen those marker trees in the woods of Bladen County where I was raised. I've even seen them down here in Fl. turkey hunting. My best friends parents land had a still dynamited back in the 70's in Columbus county, wasn't theirs. The brick furnace is still there laying on it's side.
