Re: Cap falls to bottom
Use a hydrometer, depending on recipe when you have same reading few days in a row it's done. Washes tend to go below zero.
Cap falling is not an indication of done.

Re: Cap falls to bottom
well, its a pretty good indicator of something...
Its a good bet that your close to done. I like to just let it sit and settle for a while after that cap falls. Then you can siphon off clear mash...

the "cap" is held up by co2,when it stops producing co2 the cap will fall.
this is a good indication that's its done or very close.

Close sure... Done?? Definitely not a means to call a ferment done.

Re: Cap falls to bottom
Not enough of a sign that it is complete. But definitely a sign that it's time to get out the hydrometer. Just like when the bubbles in an airlock stop, it usually means it's close to FG.

Maheel thats a mity fine answer but that ain't the
answer to the question.
What do it tell you.
Sooner or later you gonna have to learn to make do.
You break your tester what you gonna do. Wait till you
can find the time to go get another one.
It up to y'all to define what type likker maker you is.
Failure ain't a option. Your family well-being depends on it.
So im tole
I ain't never made no likker an ain't gonna in the future

Re: Cap falls to bottom
your right Goose eye
a hydro's not the only way but it's one of the easiest i reckon
i check my wash a couple of times in the 1st few days by just looking in and listening
if it's fizzing like lemonade sounds i no its working
then normally i just wait 3 weeks or more till it's very clear then i know they are done
it wont be fizzing then...
then drop the hydro in for a quick test.
i also have a taste to see if it's dry
