Could be that the hootch is pulling alot of stuff out of the chips, even with the chips removed the flavors from the chip are still there...evolving. Very interesting. Give it time and sample it every week. I'd be interested to see where it ends up.

Has anyone tried nuking an AG run without adding the chips?

Seems to me like if we are running an experiment here, there ought to be a control.....

I wonder how this would do using Mr. P's firepiss recipe?

Put some cinnamon sticks in the jar instead of j.d. Chips....

Someone asked him that and he said it would have to be someone other than him that tried it
Give it a shot and let us know how It turns out. Curious myself.

I tried some JD chips in some cheap 40% vodka, amazing it made it only two rounds and it was dark so I quit. Smoothed it some, not alot of flavor. I guess there is a dare to nuke some cinnamon sticks going on here, what the heck. Stay tuned

I love the fire piss recipe. The hardest part for me is waiting on it to age. If this process works I might have to invest in a cheap microwave for the shed because there is no way in hell I will be allowed to do this in the kitchen.... :)

If nobody else tries, I will do it this weekend after my next all feints run.

Please share your results. Here and the fire piss thread would be nice. I still have never figured out why fire piss never made it to the tried and true recipe section? :wtf:

FRUIT NUKINS THE RECIPE

Wv_cooker shared this recipe: for FRUIT NUKINS
The recipe is simple he says for making Blackberry, Strawberry and Cherry Likker

Take a quart jar, fill the jar 2/3 with fruit, added 1/2 cup sugar, filled the jar with 50% ABV Vodka that I already had setting around nuked for 2 - 1 minute increments as fruit heats to a boil rather rapidly. Let set to cool then repeat for a second nuking, let cool and drink to your liking.
The Vodka was Birdwatchers That I had diluted to 50% ABV.

1 shot of Blackberry mixed with 1 shot of JD in an 8 oz. glass filled the rest of the way with Pepsi and I am in heaven every evening before bedtime.

I managed to get home from work at a reasonable hour this evening( read: before my wife) and made a quart jar up with some cinnamon sticks in it. The white was from a sugar wash and was late hearts. It has been nuked twice and is resting comfortably on the patio cooling down.

I also made a quart jar up with some toasted charred white oak chips (not JD just plain old toasted chips that I charred up). This jar was part of a 3rd generation UJSSM run from last weekend that has been sitting around waiting on me to decide what to do with it. It is also now on its second cool down and is keeping the cinnamon sticks company.

Sometime before bedtime tonight after they cool I will taste them both and if needed do round 3 and let them cool tonight.

Thanks for the idea, and yes, pushing the start button on the microwave for the first time is a little scary.. :)

The clear, heady stuff I did a couple weeks back has gotten alot smoother. I don't think that could have happened this quickly without the nuclear massage. I could now use it for some tinctures I'm planning and even some limoncello. Cheers.

Hi BD,
Can Nuke to also expedite the entire maceration process too. Not at all saying you should.....Only saying that you can " whip up " some lemoncello in an hour if you had do a hat trick for that surprise party (or the like).

Yes! I bet lemoncello would come out in one pass. Handfull of lemon zest, cup of sgar, 2 minutes in the micro and badabing!

Weather's gettin hot around here finally, some lemoncello over ice sounds good! Might be time to fix some up with the gallons of rum Im not drinking much of haha
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Ok two rounds of microwaving the 40% vodka with a used piece of oak (from last years UJSSM runs) and one stick of cinnamon. Really strong cinnamon smell on the nose, taste is a little spicy. Wife tried it and said it tasted like cinnamon schnapps. Just did one more round now. This is with one stick I had to break in half. I was chicken to try more lol.

I'm already thinking that when we make our apple pie moonshine this year, if would be great to infuse the neutral this way before you make it. Amazing what you can do with cheap vodka. This thread is great huh?

Good idea, never thought of that. Or even just to get it started in a hurry. Could also be a good way to get Nocino going. Cheers.

I have now done a few test with this process and have a few notes to pass on.
On white panela rum 80 proof, with no chips and a 1000 watt micro it took 3 minutes to get a quart up to 155 F. I did 3 cycles on three days.
Gave two different people (my wife and a good friend) blind taste test. I didn't even even tell them about the what the test was about, just here, try this... now try this.... both tasters liked the nuked stuff better. They even both commented that the one they liked was not as harsh.

I also tried nuking a quart of macerate with mandarin orange. This was completely different as far as the time setting goes. One difference was the proof, this was more like high 180's, and the other was the fruit in the macerate. Still just one quart so I was thinking around three minutes. Nope..... :wtf: at 2 minutes I started to get a boil at the top of the jar! The temp checked out to be 165 F. Still not sure why it heated so much faster? Was it the solids or the proof?

If I let it go 3 minutes like the first quart who knows what would have happened?

Keep it safe and don't let your guard down!

I noticed something similar, Richard7; the starting temp of the distillate can easily add or, more important from the safety perspective, shave off a minute from the overall time. I was lulled by what I thought was a precedent, but only briefly.

All righty.

I'm a cautious chap.

But in 28 pages of responces and what must ammount to 100's if not 1000's of cycles, to date the worst the groups has experienced is a dead microwave, no bangs? (I like bangs when i'm trying to cause them, but not when i'm not :ewink: )

I'll give this a blast this later today on some white dog and see how we go.

1 Litre in a pyrex glass jug, 1000watt microwave, 1 minute steps up to about 3 minutes total time, max temprature of . . . 70 Celcius?

I would love an ultrasonic cleaner like odin, but at arround $200+ here . . . and i already have a microwave (for now at least  )
Where has all the rum gone? . . .

Me too. I stood a good distance from the reactor, armed with and extinguisher and very close to the electrical panel should I have needed to shut it down. I went to only 50 Celcius. Good luck.

@Richard7

It is the fruit Richard, I have done several types of fruit in 100 proof birdwatchers and each one comes to a boil by 2 minutes and sometimes 1 1/2 min. 2 sessions also seems to be plenty with fruit. I do 2 - 1 min sessions and watch for it to boil, if it starts boiling I shut it off and pull it out, seal it and let it cool. always seems to start to boil right at the 150 degrees I try to reach.

I've done something similar for quite some time but using a double boiler method, bringing my unoaked product to 160f, holding at that temp for about 5 minutes then a cold water bath. Eliminates any heads and mellows the likker nicely. Tried nuking my last batch and noticed a couple differences, when I boil the product thick white vapors are very visible coming out of the jar, no vapors when I nuke it. I don't know, the nuked product just seems more harsh to me, any tails seem more pronounced where the boiled version is more blended? Haven't tried oaking yet, thought these temps would flood the likker with tannins.

Use an older piece of oak that you already aged something on, used barrel stave, or JD chips. These have alot less tannins to worry about. In fact with this method the chips seems to have a dramatic effect, charred oak has little to no effect.

UPDATE.. About 3 weeks ago i tried my first nuking process and i had to say it was pretty good only being about 3 days old. The next day i nuked another qt but this time i removed all the chips , filtered through coffee filter, then put a fresh piece of JD barrel stave that i cut into 1/2x1/2x3 piece and charred. I also done a few experiments with cherry and apple but i didnt care for it. Well anyway i saved the very first nuking i done and the one i replaced a piece of barrel stave in and last nite i hit a shot of each....

The one with no chips (first one) 3 weeks later was pretty good
The one that i left the charred stave in was well lets just say this will be the only way i do things from here on out. The color, taste, complexity, all was awesome. I will taste again in about 3 more weeks. I found the charred piece helped round the edges if u know what i mean. OH i nuked @ 57% and oaked @ 56%.

The LEL testing I reported (on page 25 of the thread) showed a vapor level of less than 1% of the lower explosive limit in the air the fan was pushing out of the microwave. It would take 100 times that amount of vapor concentration to make an explosive mixture. Now my caution is just directed at making sure the fan is working, and, of course, that I don't sample all the hootch away.

I should have added that was my approach the first time I hit the start button. Notwithstanding evidence and facts to the contrary, it was a little unnerving the first time. I was alot more relaxed the next time I hit the start button

Good to mention again (and again) that a working fan plays a major role in the safety of this approach to aging. Cheers.

Just got done filtering some DWWG off of JD chips. Was the first DWWG that I had done and didn't care for it white at all. I diluted it down to 42% before I considered nuking it. Went ahead and did a session last night on JD chips and another around noon today. Best drink I've nuked yet! With Pepsi tastes better than a Jack and coke! I used quite a large amount of chips but only did 2 sessions.
