It was a mid September day , hotter than the hubs of hell and we hadn't had rain for 5 weeks . Our milk cow had come in season to be bred and Daddy got me to go with him to lead her to the dairy farm in the next valley to get her mated with a dairy bull .
Trackin down that sweltering , dusty red dog and clay road we came upon a neighbor trying to gravel out some potatoes from the hard baked clay soil of his garden .
"Hey , neighbor ", Daddy hollered out to be cordial ,"How them taters rollin out ?"
That hot , overworked old blister threw down his shovel , straightened up with his hands on his hips and hollered back ,
"They ain't rollin out you stupid bastard ! I got to fight the dirt for every damned one of them !"
Daddy just kind of hunched his head down between his shoulders and we walked on about our business .
We got the cow taken care of and returned by the same road later in the day . The grumpy neighbor was resting under a shade tree and feeling ashamed of his earlier behavior . When we got abreast of him he called out ,
"Hey , neighbor , where did ya get yer cow bred ?"
Daddy stopped , handed me the lead rope , and walked to the back end of the cow .
He lifted her tail , pointed and said ,
"RIGHT THERE YOU TATER DIGGIN SON OF A BITCH !" And then we went on home ................................

Purty much so except I left out the part about Daddy bitchin and fumin all the way out and back about the way he was talked to . Mellowed him a lot to get some revenge .
