buying grains

i have been buying my grains at a brew shop. i have got a 60 gallon steam kettle and want to buy some corn, rye that have already been ground for me. my brew guy says he cant get it. i don't know why since he get the pre geled grains, does anyone know where to buy this type of grain already ground for u in say 50-55 pond bags?

Most suppliers don't sell milled grains. Usually the retailer mills them on location for the buyer. If they want it milled. For a fee of course. So if you do find someone that sells it. More then likely it will be a large retailer. That doesn't have a problem milling that much. But you will be hard pressed to find one that will mill regular corn for you. They would have to reset their mill to do it.

You would be better off buying a mill. A corona mill can be had for around $20. That would mill corn. Then you can go to a feed store and buy your corn. And if your lucky rye also. Then mill it yourself. Just make sure the mill can handle corn. My roller mill won't do whole corn. So I get cracked corn from the feed store. And run it through my mill. If I want it smaller.

By the time you go a few rounds ponying up go shipping on 55lb bags you have most of the cost of a decent roller covered.

Cracked corn at your nearest feed store for $11 a 50 lb bag

Now that's not a bad price but Dang!! They want $100 bucks for a 50lb bag of rye malt...

I buy my rye from a local organic scoop and save type store. Comes rough ground and they give me a discount because i buy a whole 20kg bag(44lbs) for about 40bucks. They sell corn meal as well in three different grinds for about the same price. I have used the course ground meal but switched to feed corn at 12 bucks a 50lb sack.

We ran a group buy for our area last year. It was based out of one the big beer forums. There are a lot of groups throughout the states. Someone opens an account with a distributer (this just happened to be my buddie) and takes orders. we received 4000lbs of grain. I believe the average bag was 45.00
