Hydrometer

Can't really find a good set of instructions for using a hydrometer, anyone have any suggestions?? From what I've read it's a different process for beer than spirits. Any info would be great, thanks:)

there is two.one is used for beer/wine/mash/wash,this is used before distilling.(this really measures sugar or lack there of)
then there is a proof @ tralle that is after distilling.(this measures the amount of alcohol in distilled spirits)
