glass jug

Post by newbietoo »

I want to age some of my shine. I'm gonna age some in a glass jug I got. Its round about 5 gallon. But I also wanted to try a smaller batch with different flavor. My 1 gallon glass jugs have a small neck. My question is. Should I cut part of the neck off (so i can put my wood in it) and make a stopper to fit it.
The doctor says i need to drink more whiskey.
Also. I am calling myself "the doctor" now.

Before you start cutting glass jars try JD chips, you can buy them at most stores that sell BBQ or camping equipment. They should fit inside your jars.

I've heard about em. But I've read that you need 3/4" at least to get the color gradient that you need. So I was skeptical of em.

Im not sure where you are but usually local home brew stores have oak cubes that would fit in there.

color won't be an issue... just check it for taste as it oaks much faster with chips than with staves or domino's ...

Make something you like the taste of screw the rest of em... :D

walmart also has cherry and apple wood chips if you want a variance.... the jd chips no toasting required the rest you may want to put in the oven for a few hours...

have fun.... be safe or name it after bushman... bushy jr. maybe

Straight up or did you nuke them at all? What was your chip to liquid ratio?

125g to 250g to the liter i have seen in the nuke thread...

I'm in the great North Carolina.
My jugs have a really small opening. But what I've got in em I can't complain.
That looks beautiful. Is 2 weeks as long as you aged it. Or are you gonna age longer? Is it fairly smooth?

I did not nuke or US as I am in know hurry to age this as I have a decent backlog. I just filled the bottom about an inch no ratio taken as I have never over oaked with JD chips.

Newbietoo, they will be there about 6 months to a year.

I would at least look at the 1/2 gallon or quart mason jars. In my area I can buy 6- half gallon mason jars for $10-$12 or a dozen quarts for the same money. If you got the 6 half gallons jars and did them on sticks and the rest on chips it would give you and maybe everyone your opinion of what you like best. I have not used the chips so I can't say good or bad. The only problem I have with sticks is I have a hard time keeping the stuff for 3 or 4 months. I do like the little neck gallons. I think that would be wonderful long term storage.

I have some 5 and 6.5 gallon carboys that I age my liquor in. I also use 1-gallon jugs when I'm testing out different woods. For the carboys I use wood spirals for oaking:

For the 1-gallon jugs I use oak cubes:

I've got a few quart jars. I can't find any half gallon jars. I picked up these gallon glass jugs for 50 cent a piece. I wanted to make a lil more than a quart so I could have a more uniform color and flavor.

I have had VERYgood results with the JD chips in quart jars! As was mentioned earlier about an inch in a quart jar, or a good handfull, will do the trick. One of my favorite drinks is sweetfeed rum aged this way. The closer it gets to the bottom the better it tastes! If you had a jd half barrel planter you could take the barrel apart and rip some of the staves into small lengths and widths to fit your gallon jars. Drill small diameter holes in each piece approximately 1/2 inch apart perpendicular to the grain to help quicken the process! I use a staggered pattern rather than a straight line. Get some cherry wood chips at Lowes or HD, dont worry about toasting and set up a few jars with them. Makes a slightly sweet and aromatic drink-may surprise you. If skeptical put some in a jar of heads and give it a few weeks-just dont forget it is heads and drink it!
